Main duties of the job
The Community Nursery Nurse will work both independently and as part of the health visiting team to promote positive outcomes for children and young people. The main duties of the role include carrying out developmental assessments and supporting parents/carers by offering advice and support /care interventions on a wide range of health issues; including, toileting, behaviour management, and parenting advice, individually and in groups.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- The Community Nursery Nurse (CNN) is responsible for assisting in the identification and assessment of the health needs of both children and families.
- To undertake or participate in universal developmental reviews, including heights and weights of pre-school children as delegated by the Health Visitor.
- To work closely with the Health Visitors in the planning and delivery of health promotion activities and public health initiatives in a variety of settings.
- To carry out home visits as a lone worker when delegated by a Health visitor.
- To carry out delegated family support interventions or programmes of planned care in partnership with children and carers and other agencies under the supervision of the Health Visitor. This can include delivery of health promoting activities in homes, health care or community settings, with individuals and groups.
- To contribute to the assessment of health needs and delivery of appropriate services to meet needs of children, families and the wider community.
- To provide and promote access to information and other services, to refer as appropriate.
- To liaise and work in partnership with statutory and non-statutory agencies, and other health services colleagues.
- To work in partnership with local Family Hubs and other agencies to encourage and involve parents with programmes of support. To input in the planning and delivery of those services.
- To contribute to Early Support and act as Lead professional where appropriate.
- To utilise skills of observation and recognise any significant change in client circumstances and report back to the Health Visitor.
- To work with the team to support children, young people and families who are considered to be vulnerable or at risk. To be aware of and adhere to current approved policies and procedures of Solihull Safeguarding Children Partnership Board.
- To undertake mandatory training, and service specific training as required maintaining skills and competencies.
- To participate in regular clinical supervision, appraisals and clinical rounds with delegated Health Visitor and attend team meetings.
- To support and contribute to the development of integrated team working by modelling effective team practice and good communication skills.
- To be an advocate of service change and future development.
- To ensure that individuals within the teams are aware of and work within the Trust policies procedures.
- To develop and maintain effective and appropriate communication with staff and colleagues within the Health visiting teams, Family Hubs and Early Years Settings.
- To take reasonable steps to see that the working environment is safe, healthy and hazard free for staff and users, this includes ensuring that infection control procedures are in place.
- To be competent in the use of information technology and ensure that relevant and up to date information on clinical and service developments are provided to agreed time-scales.
- To participate in audit, research projects and/or innovations following agreed policy and protocol.
- To participate in the induction of newly appointed team members.
- To maintain accurate, legible and contemporaneous records, deal with highly sensitive information, respecting confidentiality and security at all times in accordance with trust policies for data protection.
- All incidents (and near misses) must be reported to the appropriate health visitor within the team and then recorded on the InPhase System.

Essential
- Be able to demonstrate organisational/planning skills
- Must demonstrate knowledge of the role of the school nurse team in the promotion of health and wellbeing
- Must be able to demonstrate an understanding of the need for confidentiality in all aspects of the work of the department
- Must have a knowledge and understanding of the principles of safeguarding vulnerable children/young people and adults
- Must be able to demonstrate ability to work in a team and independently
- Possess good interpersonal skills and be able to communicate with colleagues, other professionals and children, young people and their families
Experience
Essential
- Must have a minimum of two years’ experience working with children and families
- Experience in giving health advice to parents/carers and other agencies e.g. education staff
- Have an understanding of health promotion activities that promote positive outcomes for children and young people
- Must have experience in using Microsoft office/word/excel and be able to use social media Twitter and Facebook
Qualifications
Essential
- Foundation degree Assistant practitioner /NVQ level 3 in early years care/Btec in early years or equivalent
- Completed Common Assessment Framework training or willing to undertake training
- Must have a willingness and commitment to undertake training as required for the role
Other Job Requirements

- Must have a full driving licence, and access to a vehicle to undertake the community role
- Must be willing to undertake a Disclosure & Barring Service check
- Must be legally entitled to work in this country
- Must be prepared to work between 8am – 8pm and weekend if required
- Must be a non-smoker whilst on duty
