We are looking for an enthusiastic and energetic full time Band 6 Clinical Specialist Occupational Therapist to join the Male Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and Therapy Team based at Highgate West Mental Health Centre.

The post holder will be required to deliver a comprehensive Occupational Therapy Service for service users primarily on one designated ward. They will also work closely with Clinical Lead OT, OT Assistant, Activity workers and Art Psychotherapist to provide specialist Occupational Therapy Service to both male and female service users on the 2 PICU wards at Highgate and additionally contribute as required to the Central Therapy Group Programme.

Main duties of the job

As a member of the multidisciplinary team the post-holder will be required to meet the identified occupational and functional needs of service users on their caseload. This includes providing a variety of person-centred assessments and interventions, promoting a recovery approach and social inclusion, to maximise activity of daily living skills and lifestyle management.

The post-holder will ensure that their practice meets the requirements of this clinical group and assess the needs of service users with complex mental and physical health needs. This includes falls risk minimisation work and the issuing and provision of equipment, aids and minor adaptations.

The post holder will have supervisory responsibility for junior staff and student practitioners working in the unit. They work will receive supervision and mentoring from the PICU OT Clinical Lead.

Although staff are allocated initially to work in one specific ward, all appointments are made to the Therapy Department

To be responsible for providing expert care in OT, in accordance with the HCPC codes of professional conduct

To provide expert, autonomous and highly specialist OT clinical practice within a multi-disciplinary Team to include:

• Initial assessment and formulation using a range of mental health or other specialist tools
• When required to do so making appropriate judgements about own caseload
• To assess, plan, implement and evaluate care in negotiation with service users, carers and other services, considering the needs of a diverse community
• Undertaking OT specific assessment and interventions
• Apply a range of therapeutic modalities, using evidence-based interventions in accordance with the requirements of care pathways
• Contributing to multidisciplinary team decisions at the point of discharge and or transfer of the service user
• To participate in and provide a specialist OT perspective to multi-disciplinary team meetings/case discussions
