JOB TITLE: Clinical Research Staff Manager

ACCOUNTABLE TO: Assistant Director, Medical Directorate

JOB SUMMARY

The postholder will support the R&D Manager and R&D Medical Director in the delivery of a safe, high quality research service.

The postholder will coordinate, manage, and ensure efficient and effective use of workforce capacity, staff activity, cover, and continuity of service across several clinical specialties.

The postholder will monitor, manage and ensure appropriate use of the SHSCT Commercial Research Delivery Centre (CRDC), and will work closely with the R&D Manager on all aspects of performance and research management.

The postholder will act as professional* and direct line Manager to the team of Clinical Research Nurses/Allied Health Professionals (CRN/AHP) and will be responsible for their performance and professional development. *Dependent on qualification

The postholder will promote the role of CRNs/AHPs working within multi-disciplinary teams in SHSCT and will also link with regional delivery teams to ensure standardisation and shared learning of best practice.

The postholder will actively promote and raise awareness of R&D, its impacts and benefits. Other responsibilities may include deputising for the R&D Manager/R&D Director, as and when required.

KEY DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Service Delivery

The post holder will

● Ensure organisational goals are reflected in the teams’ objectives and plans

• Manage and support the CRNs/AHPs team in the conduct and delivery of research studies. Distribute workload between CRNs/AHPs supporting the research projects, adjusting, as required to meet deadlines.

● Manage and monitor patient recruitment and tracking of progress throughout trial participation.

● Liaise with the research team to set timescales and resolve problems in meeting deadlines.

● Organise and submit documents required for Trust R&D capacity and capability approval

● Maintain trial master files, taking responsibility for the day-to-day project administration and document control, which can involve management of multiple research projects at any one time

● Ensure adherence to research legislation, policy and professional guidelines

● Facilitate overall improvements in the care of research participants

● Oversee the quality of research data collected for Trust sponsored studies

● Contribute to and develop relevant policies, procedures, guidance and SOPs and to the progression of the Trusts R&D Plan alongside all associated implementation plans

● Improve participant recruitment into research

● Promote benefits of research to staff, service users and the public

● Work unsupervised in day-to-day practice co-ordinating a portfolio of clinical trials/ research studies, in accordance with Good Clinical Practice and the Research Governance Framework

● Work in collaboration with all members of the clinical research team and wider multi-disciplinary teams

● Keep abreast of current, potential research and information relevant to the care of participants and service delivery within specialist clinical areas and relevant to clinical trial participation

● Provide specialist research knowledge and expertise across the clinical area of responsibility, to other departments and external research partners/funders in a timely and appropriate manner

● Assess patient suitability for research and advise accordingly. Assess and monitor patient progress throughout research and advise staff on any further training/skills/support required.

2. Communication & Information Management

• Communicate effectively with staff and ensure good working relationships.

• Investigate, report and action all complaints as per Trust policies and procedures.

• Play a key role in the informed consent of participants into research. Provide information to participants to enable them to make an informed decision as to whether they wish to participate in a research project. This may involve consenting of participants when delegated by the Investigator.

• Prepare progress reports and presentations to the research team and appropriate others.

• Monitor progress of participant recruitment via electronic databases, assess and undertake appropriate action, where required. Ensure accurate, complete trial data and records are collected by all team members working on the research projects.

• Ensure effective liaison and maintain regular communication with R&D department, internal Trust departments and external agencies (sponsor companies, trial co-ordinating centres, networks etc.)

• Participate in senior research nurse/midwifery/allied health professional meetings and lead on a CRNs/AHPs management strategy (including induction and training) in SHSCT.

• Liaise with the sponsor CRAs and/or monitors during the conduct of a trial on behalf of the department and feedback any relevant issues to senior management.

• Prepare and participate in formal presentations in conferences, seminars and other educational meetings as appropriate (providing feedback to CRNs/AHPs staff on completion of a trial etc.).

• Undertake educational activities to develop skills and knowledge as required for this post and for the research team and any support staff.

• Maintain effective records management ensuring all documentation written and electronic is managed as per Trust policy and guidelines.

3. Quality

• Ensure that the needs of patients and their care are aligned to Trust service delivery.

• Work within the Trust’s governance framework to ensure policies and procedures meet relevant statutory requirements, professional standards, policy guidance and workforce and regulatory requirements.

• Ensure compliance with all relevant policies, procedures and regulatory standards.

• Promote a culture of continuous service improvement amongst staff, encouraging their participation and that of service users in reviewing and modernising current services and in service development, research and innovation.

• Participate in monitoring and audit of studies in accordance with standard operating procedures.

4. Financial and Resource Management

• Manage the team budget including salaries, goods and services.

• Work with Finance and HR colleagues to monitor and report on expenditure, making recommendations for improvement.

• Ensure high standards of financial governance and support financial recovery.

5. Professional and People Management and Development

• Provide clear leadership and effective line management to staff, ensuring that all staff are appropriately skilled, motivated and have professional supervision.

• Ensure that management structures and practices within nursing and midwifery support a culture of effective team working, continuous improvement and innovation.

• Lead by example in practicing the highest standards of conduct in accordance with the Code of Conduct for HSC Staff.

• Promote good staff relationships and morale amongst the staff who report to him / her.

• Promote the Trust’s policy on equality of opportunity through actions and ensure that this policy is adhered to by staff for which he/she has responsibility.

• Deputise for the Assistant Director of Nursing, Patient Safety, Quality and Experience as required.

• To work proactively with the Trust’s Emergency planner and other internal and external stakeholders to develop appropriate emergency response and business continuity plans to ensure the service can maintain a state of emergency preparedness to respond safely and effectively to a range of threats, hazards and disruption.

• Promote and support the implementation of the Trust’s PPI Strategy and ensure all staff are aware of their responsibilities as appropriate to their job role.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

The post holder will be required to

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA

Experience: Have a minimum of 4 years post registration experience to include 2 years’ experience at Band 6 or above

Qualifications/ Registration: BSc or Diploma (or equivalent) as a Registered General Nurse Part 1 (Adults) and live on NMC Register OR BSc (Hons) or Diploma (or equivalent) Allied Health Professional and registered on HCPC register

Other: Hold a current full driving licence which is valid for use in the UK and have access to a car on appointment. This criteria will be waived in the case of applicants whose disability prohibits driving but who have access to a form of transport approved by the Trust which will permit them to carry out the duties of the post.

SECTION 2: The following are ESSENTIAL criteria which will be measured during the interview/ selection stage:

Skills / Abilities: Ability to lead and manage staff; Ability to work as part of a team and use own initiative; Ability to manage conflict and difficult situations; Excellent interpersonal skills, including written and oral communication skills; IT skills – proven experience in the use of Microsoft office packages; Good time management skills – able to plan, organised, work to agreed timescales and multi-task effectively; Ability to manage change and projects

Knowledge: Knowledge of clinical trials, consent process and research governance; Knowledge of research strategies, research and nursing/AHP frameworks

DESIRABLE CRITERIA

Experience: Postgraduate research related training; Staff Management responsibility to include supervision of other staff; Have worked with research databases for e.g. EDGE, registries; Have completed Good Clinical Practice (GCP) training AND/OR research integrity training
