The Jenny Lind Children’s Hospital is a hospital within a hospital for children and young people. We have a consultant team of acute general paediatricians, neonatal paediatricians, paediatric surgeons and community paediatricians who contribute to the services here and are supported by an extensive team of specialist nurses and other professionals including physiotherapy, dietetics, speech and language therapy, play specialists and clinical psychology.  We also provide an acute emergency service for medical and surgical problems in children from birth, including neonatal intensive care, to 16 years and in some cases beyond.  We put the needs of children and their families first and to care with PRIDE - providing high-quality, safe, and compassionate care, guided by values of being people-focused, respectful, acting with integrity, and dedication.

We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic Children’s Asthma Specialist Nurse with the passion and expertise to improve outcomes for children and young people presenting to hospital with acute asthma and wheeze.

If you are considering applying for this post on a secondment basis, please discuss with your Line Manager prior to applying to ascertain whether this could be supported.

Main duties of the job

In this Band 7 specialist role, you will deliver 48 hour post discharge asthma reviews for children admitted with asthma or wheeze, ensuring recovery is progressing as expected, that families receive high quality, evidence based education, and that appropriate safety netting is in place. You will play a key role in improving the quality and consistency of asthma care across the service.

You will work closely with the paediatric respiratory team, supporting the ongoing implementation, audit and evaluation of the National Bundle of Care for Children and Young People with Asthma, including children requiring care within our Level 2 Paediatric High Dependency Unit. A significant element of this post involves service development. You will lead the establishment of a new 48 hour asthma discharge review service. As such, previous experience of successfully implementing and evaluating a quality improvement project within an NHS organisation is essential. You must be able to demonstrate independent project management skills, including planning, delivery and evaluation. Relevant experience may have been gained in either primary or secondary care and with patients of any age group.

You will be an effective team player who is also confident working autonomously, demonstrating consistently high standards of care for children, young people and their families, and acting as a role model for best practice in paediatric asthma management.
