Job overview

The Clinical Business Manager (CBM) for the Division of Medicine will provide dynamic and visible operational leadership across a complex portfolio of services, ensuring the delivery of safe, high-quality, patient-centred care. The post holder will work in partnership with clinical, nursing and corporate colleagues to lead service performance, operational delivery and strategic transformation programmes, with a particular focus on Urgent and Emergency Care (UEC) pathways and improving patient flow across the health system.

Main duties of the job

The CBM will have responsibility for driving performance against key operational and constitutional standards, including 4-hour Emergency Department performance, reduction in 12-hour waits, elective and non-elective recovery targets, and delivery of agreed quality, workforce and financial objectives. They will provide strong leadership to multidisciplinary teams, fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, continuous improvement and excellence in patient care.

The successful candidate will be a highly motivated, resilient and forward-thinking leader with a strong understanding of UEC systems, acute hospital operations and service transformation. They will play a pivotal role in leading and implementing changes to the Acute Medicine model, identifying opportunities for innovation and improvement, and ensuring services are responsive to the changing needs of patients and the organisation.

As a key member of the divisional leadership team, the post holder will demonstrate excellent stakeholder management skills, the ability to influence across organisational boundaries, and a commitment to delivering sustainable improvements that enhance patient outcomes, staff experience and operational performance. They will champion a patient-centred approach in all aspects of service delivery, ensuring that quality, safety and experience remain at the heart of decision-making

  • To lead and manage the clinical business units ensuring the best use of available resources to provide efficient and effective delivery of all services in line with best practice and quality standards
  • To support the development of the Divisional and Trust strategy through understanding the strategic contribution of the services delivered by the clinical business units.
  • To develop a culture within the clinical business units that encourages the use of initiative, individual and team responsibility and open communications.
  • To effectively manage the clinical business units staff
  • To effectively manage the clinical business units budget and finance
  • To lead the clinical business units governance arrangements
  • To manage self and workload in a way that ensures the continued support of others
