Job overview

The Clinic Nurse Manager will work within the Surgical Outpatients Department, leading by example and promoting a positive and supportive working culture that enhances staff wellbeing and embeds high standards of teamwork and patient care. The post holder will work clinically three days per week to support the delivery of safe, effective, and high-quality patient care, while helping to foster cohesive team working and a psychologically safe working environment. They will be approachable and supportive to all members of the team and will work closely with fellow Clinic Nurse Managers, including the rotational Clinic Nurse Manager, Senior Sister, and Matron, to ensure effective leadership and service delivery.

The Clinic Nurse Manager will work collaboratively with the wider multidisciplinary team (MDT) and provide support in managing day-to-day operational challenges and issues arising within the department, including when acting as Nurse in Charge (NIC). The role will include supporting service improvement, maintaining professional standards, and ensuring the delivery of patient-centred care within the outpatient setting.

Main duties of the job

The Clinic Nurse Manager will support the day-to-day operational running of the Surgical Outpatients Department, ensuring the delivery of safe, efficient, and high-quality patient care. The post holder will provide visible leadership, clinical presence, and ongoing support to the multidisciplinary team within the department, working under the guidance and with support from the Band 7 Senior Sister.

The role will be structured to include three clinical working days and two dedicated management days per week, enabling a balance between hands-on clinical leadership and managerial responsibilities.

Key responsibilities include:

Supporting the daily running of the Surgical Outpatients Department, ensuring smooth patient flow and effective service delivery.

  • Providing leadership, visibility, and support to nursing and wider multidisciplinary team (MDT) staff.
  • Acting as a first point of contact for resolving issues, concerns, or escalations within the department in a timely, professional, and effective manner.
  • Fostering a positive team culture and promoting staff wellbeing.
  • Acting as Nurse in Charge on a rotational weekly basis, ensuring safe staffing, effective escalation management, and overall clinical oversight during clinical shifts.
  • Supporting cross-site working when required, including providing support to clinics and undertaking Clinic Nurse Manager duties across sites to maintain service delivery and operational effectiveness.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Work clinically three days per week within the Surgical Outpatients Department, leading by example and working alongside the team to support the safe and effective running of clinics.
  • Provide direct clinical support within outpatient clinics, including undertaking vital signs, urinalysis, chaperoning, wound care and dressings, and supporting clinicians with procedures as required.
  • Promote high standards of patient care, professionalism, teamwork, and patient experience at all times.
  • Act as an approachable, visible, and supportive leader, fostering a positive and psychologically safe working environment for all staff.
  • Support the day-to-day operational management of the department, including acting as Nurse in Charge (NIC) and responding appropriately to clinical and operational challenges as they arise.
  • Manage and respond to patient concerns and complaints appropriately, with support and guidance from the Senior Sister where required.
  • Undertake management responsibilities during allocated management days (two days per week), including completion of return-to-work interviews, occupational health referrals, sickness absence stage meetings, and rota reviews.
  • Coordinate and authorise annual leave requests in line with service needs to ensure safe staffing levels and the effective running of the department.
  • Review, investigate, and support the management of Datix incidents, ensuring learning opportunities and service improvements are identified and implemented where appropriate.
  • Support recruitment and selection processes, including participation in shortlisting, interviewing, and onboarding of new staff to ensure safe and effective staffing within the department.
  • Develop, implement, and review tailored adjustment plans for staff in line with individual needs, ensuring compliance with occupational health recommendations and promoting safe, inclusive working practices.
  • Support the creation and ongoing review of Wellness Action Plans, promoting staff wellbeing, early intervention, and a supportive approach to mental health and workplace stress.
  • Work collaboratively with other Clinic Nurse Managers, the rotational Clinic Nurse Manager, Senior Sister, Matron, and wider multidisciplinary team (MDT) to ensure effective service delivery and continuity of leadership across the department.
  • Provide cross-cover during periods of annual leave, sickness, or absence to maintain operational stability and continuity of care.
  • Support staff wellbeing, development, and engagement through effective communication, leadership, mentorship, and role modelling.
  • Contribute to service development, quality improvement, and transformation initiatives in line with organisational objectives and NHS England priorities
