Job overview

We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic Registered Nurse to join our Children’s Epilepsy Team at York Hospital. The ideal candidate will have experience in caring for children with epilepsy and will hold a recognised epilepsy qualification. However, applications are welcomed from Nurses who demonstrate the potential to develop into the role but do not yet meet all essential criteria.

This postholder will provide clinical care and support to children and their families with a new diagnosis of epilepsy and ongoing to support for those already diagnosed. The Epilepsy Nurse will support consultants in clinic and run nurse led follow up clinics. They may also provide care on the ward or in clinic, through home visits or by telephone. Excellent communication skills are vital for this role

Where a candidate does not currently hold the required qualification and/or specialist experience, appointment may be made under Annex 21 of the NHS Agenda for Change Terms and Conditions. This will be a B5 developmental post, supported by a structured training and competency programme, becoming a B6 on completion.

Main duties of the job

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Registered Nurse with experience of caring for children with epilepsy to join our Children’s Epilepsy Specialist Nursing team. The ideal candidate can be a Children’s Nurse, Adult Nurse or Learning disabilities Nurse but with significant experience and understanding of caring for children with Epilepsy.

The role will involve supporting newly diagnosed children and their families, ensuring optimum seizure control throughout childhood and transition into adult services. Working as part of the multi-disciplinary team the Children’s Epilepsy Specialist Nurses provide a holistic approach to the health, social and psychological well-being of children with epilepsy.

This is a permanent Band 6 contract for 22.5 hours per week, worked over 3 days, Monday-Friday. The post is based at York hospital but may involve working from home or undertaking school visits at times. The post holder must hold a full driving licence and be

The role will also involve supporting and training colleagues and educational staff to ensure that the children and their families receive the highest levels of care.

Experience and Education

Essential

  • Registered Children’s Nurse (part 15 or part 8 equivalent)
  • To have thorough knowledge of epilepsy management, with evidence of continued professional development and implementation in clinical practice with in the last 12 months.
  • Recognised teaching/assessing qualification.
  • Car driver and able to work independently within the community setting as required.
  • Working knowledge of child protection issues.
  • Recognised specialist qualification.

Desirable

  • Ability to organise and prioritise workload, working autonomously.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to self development and professional training.
  • Experience of developing protocols in conjunction with clinical leads.
