Job overview
Sandwell & West Birmingham Hospitals is looking for an experienced Catering Manager to work across the trust. The successful candidate must have experience in a similar sized NHS hospital trust.
To be responsible for the day-to-day operation of the retail outlets and the patient's meal service including the receipts and distribution of patient meals, ward provisions, associated dishwashing & cleaning service ensuring a quality service and high standards of hygiene are maintained at all times
Main duties of the job
To work in conjunction with the site Catering Manager to be responsible for the daily management of the Catering Department to include working on own initiative and dealing with all day-to-day operational issues.
To be responsible for compiling and maintaining the staff rotas including the planning and authorising of AL ensuring the most effective use of resources, maximising efficiency, maintaining standards and safe working procedures.
To be responsible for the management of the Catering staff to include:
- Staff Induction
- Identify staff training and development
- Staff conduct, counselling and welfare arranging appropriate support where required
- Managing Sickness Absence, conducting staff meetings, monitoring, setting targets and Occupational Health referrals
- Annual staff appraisals
- To participate in the recruitment and selection of Catering Staff.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
To actively promote the Catering service for staff and visitors through sales and marketing, having a balanced approach to maximising sales and minimising costs while maintaining a quality service that meets the need of the customer. To oversee the daily operation of the retail catering services for staff and visitors. To be actively involved in planning, monitoring and reviewing retail menus with consideration of dining room sales, food wastage and customer requests. To monitor food production levels against customer demands and make appropriate adjustments to minimise waste and reduce food costs. Undertake customer satisfaction surveys to assess customer needs & expectations and sales promotions as required. To market and promote the hospitality services to include menu planning, meeting with external agencies and reviewing the service to increase revenue for the Trust.
To oversee the daily operation of the Patient Meal Service to include the delivery & regeneration of food, patients dishwashing service, issue of perishables & dietary products, temperature monitoring and associated cleaning duties.
To be involved in planning, monitoring and reviewing patients menus ensuring they are nutritionally balanced and in line with PLACE requirements, patient feedback, client groups, dietary needs and styles of service delivery
To liase with the dieticians and speech & language therapies on the provision of special diets.
To respond to patient’s complaints when they arise, liasing with PALS as required and meeting directly with patients and/or their relatives to solve the problems raised.
To undertake annual staff appraisals and organise training requirements in line with the departments aim & objectives and as identify by staff member & management.
To ensure that current and future Food Hygiene and Health & Safety regulations are applied throughout the department, promote good practise and review and update HACCP procedures, risk assessments and other relevant requirements. To identify and implement improvements as appropriate
Ensure all set policies and procedures for the safe, hygienic production, delivery, storage and service of food is strictly applied at all times
