Main duties of the job

An exciting opportunity has arisen at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust to join the Breast Care team.

We are looking for a  as a Breast Care Nurse specialist to come and work with us for  21 hours per week.

The Breast Care Nurse plays a vital role in delivering high‑quality, compassionate care to individuals affected by breast disease.

Acting as a key point of contact throughout the patient pathway, the post holder provides specialist clinical support, information, and emotional reassurance from diagnosis through treatment, follow‑up, and survivorship.

Working as part of the multidisciplinary breast team, the Breast Care Nurse contributes directly to improving patient experience and outcomes by promoting informed decision‑making, coordinating care, and advocating for patients’ needs. The role supports organisational objectives by helping to deliver safe, patient‑centred services, reducing anxiety, and ensuring care is aligned with national standards and best practice.

The post holder reports to the Lead Breast Care Nurse and works in close collaboration with breast surgeons, oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, and allied health professionals. The role involves close teamwork within the Breast Care Nursing team and liaison with wider hospital and community services to ensure seamless, holistic care for patients and their families.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

- Registered Adult Nurse with experience in breast cancer care and a background in oncology, surgery, or a leadership role, with the ability to provide expert clinical, emotional, and informational support to patients across the breast cancer pathway.

- Strong evidence of advanced communication, assessment, and coordination skills to support patients, families, and the multidisciplinary team in delivering high‑quality, person‑centred care.

- Ability to work autonomously while contributing effectively to the Breast Care Nursing team, supporting service priorities and organisational quality and safety objectives.

- Awareness and understanding of wider Trust pressures, including demand management, performance targets, and service improvement priorities, with the ability to work proactively and flexibly within these constraints.

- Willingness to work flexibly to meet service needs, including covering agreed clinic times and participating in service development activity.

Qualifications, knowledge and experience

Essential

  • Registered nurse on relevant part of the NMC register
  • Degree qualification or equivalent 120 credits at L6
  • Post registration qualification within area of speciality or equivalent experience.
  • Completion of all Band 5 (preceptorship) competencies
  • Extensive post registration experience within specialist area.

Desirable

  • Registered on MSc Pathway – completion of HTPA Competencies
  • Counselling qualification
  • Palliative care course
