JOB DESCRIPTION

POST: Residential & Supported Living Support Worker

LOCATION: Antrim Town - Greystone & Cherry Hill

BAND: 3

REPORTS TO: Residential & Supported Living Manager

RESPONSIBLE TO: Service Manager

Job Summary / Main Purpose

Working as part of a team which provides care and supports adults with a Learning Disability in the area of accommodation and social care. Working with people with a learning disability is one of the most rewarding jobs you can do. Getting to know people with a learning disability can take time, patience and a high level of empathy so these are important personal characteristics for each candidate.

Discovering the things that people with a learning disability enjoy and building relationships with them, will be an integral part of the role. Candidate's personal attributes should include values of sensitivity, person centred care, respect and understanding of people with a learning disability.

In keeping with the changing needs of service users you will be required to work appropriate shift patterns, on a 24hr - 7 days a week basis. This includes weekend working, sleep-in duties and waking night duties. To support you in delivering the appropriate person centred care you will receive both an induction and ongoing training to encourage appropriate skill development.

Main Duties / Responsibilities

For each of the following, the postholder will;

Support service users to acquire and maintain daily living skills and household tasks.

Provide direct care and / or assistance in areas of personal and intimate care to meet the complex health care needs of service users.

Support service users in the care of clothing in respect of washing, ironing etc.

Support in the preparation, choice of meals and cooking meals.

Assist and support service users in the maintenance of good standards of homecare which includes housework.

Participate in handover reporting and to identify any areas of concern.

When necessary accompany / support service users whilst shopping or whilst engaging in other day to day community activities and recreational activities.

Accompany the service user to attend GP and other medical appointments.

Develop and maintain good relationships with service users' families, relatives and friends.

Notify the manager of his / her nominee of any change in service users circumstances.

Maintenance of appropriate records and taking required action.

Participate in the planning, development and implementing of individual care packages for service users.

Report any adverse incidents or complaints in accordance with Trust procedures.

Attend meetings and supervision sessions when required.

Participate in training opportunities, which include: Induction Training, all mandatory training, and all other training to ensure a person centred service delivery.

Adhere to all Health and Safety procedures as required by the Trust or Facility.

Promote equality of opportunity and good relations as outlined in the Trust's Equality Scheme.

Be aware of the Human Rights legislation in relation to the requirements of this post.

Medication

Support service users with the safe handling, administration and recording of medication.

Financial

Ensure strict adherence to the Trust's financial procedures and policies in regards to all financial matters and report any discrepancies to the line manager.

Environmental Cleaning Strategy

The Trusts Environmental Cleaning Strategy recognises the key principle that "Cleanliness matters is everyone's responsibility, not just the cleaners" Whilst there are staff employed who are responsible for cleaning services, all Trust staff have a responsibility to ensure a clean, comfortable, safe environment for patients, clients, residents, visitors, staff and members of the general public.

Infection Prevention and Control

The Belfast Trust is committed to reducing Healthcare associated infections (HCAIs) and all staff have a part to play in making this happen. Staff must comply with all policies in relation to Infection Prevention and Control and with ongoing reduction strategies. Standard Infection Prevention and Control Precautions must be used at all times to ensure the safety of patients and staff.

This includes:-

Cleaning hands either with soap and water or a hand sanitiser at the appropriate times (WHO '5 moments');

Using the correct '7 step' hand hygiene technique;

Being 'bare below the elbows' when in a clinical environment;

Following Trust policies and the Regional Infection Control Manual (found on intranet);

Wearing the correct Personal Protective Equipment (PPE);

Ensuring correct handling and disposal of waste (including sharps) and laundry;

Ensuring all medical devices (equipment) are decontaminated appropriately i.e. cleaned, disinfected and/or sterilised;

Ensuring compliance with High Impact Interventions.

PERSONNEL SPECIFICATION

2 years' experience of delivering care & support in a homely/caring environment.

OR

1 years' experience of delivering direct care and support in a health or social care environment and an appropriate level 2 NVQ/QCF qualification.

1 years' experience of delivering direct care and support in a health or social care environment / homely caring environment and 4 GCSE's (or equivalents.)

Hold appropriate level 3 NVQ/QCF.

Must also have

Hold a current registration with NI Social Care Council, either as a social care worker or professional social worker, or be eligible to apply for same or registration with other professional body.

Be able to work flexible hours including evenings, night duty, sleep in duties, weekends and bank holidays as required.

Willingness to undertake Trust two week Induction Programme prior to work placement.

Must undertake QCF level 2 certificate in Health and Social Care if required.

Shortlisting by Application Form

Ability to communicate clearly in writing and speech.

An understanding of the issues involved in supporting an individual with a learning disability.

NOTE

Where educational/professional qualifications form part of the criteria you will be required, if shortlisted for interview, to produce original certificates and one photocopy of same issued by the appropriate authority. Only those certificates relevant to the shortlisting criteria should be produced. If educational certificates are not available an original letter and photocopy of same detailing examination results from your school or college will be accepted as an alternative.

If successful you will be required to produce documentary evidence that you are legally entitled to live and work in the United Kingdom. This documentation can be a P45, Payslip, National Insurance Card or a Birth Certificate confirming birth in the United Kingdom or the Republic of Ireland. Failure to produce evidence will result in a non-appointment.
