JOB DESCRIPTION

POST: Care Assistant

LOCATION: Residential Home - Bruce House EMI

BAND: Band 3

REPORTS TO: Facility Manager

RESPONSIBLE TO: Service Manager - Community Mental Health Team for Older People

Job Summary / Main Purpose

The care assistant is part of a caring team responsible for the provision of a holistic person centred service to older people with dementia, which encourages and promotes the core values of personhood, independence, respect, choice, dignity, privacy and fulfilment.

The job role requires the care assistant to contribute to the development and implementation of a care plan, in a way that promotes choice and independence and respects the person's right to independence, dignity, privacy and fulfilment.

The care assistant will carry out their duties under the direction and supervision of a Senior Care Assistant.

The care assistant will attend to the direct care needs of residents in accordance with their care plan and provide emotional and spiritual support to residents in accordance to their needs

Main Duties / Responsibilities

For each of the following, the post holder will:-

Personal & Physical Care

Assist and support the residents with personal care tasks depending on their needs. These tasks are carried out at a level agreed with the older person and identified in their personal care plan and may include assistance with getting up in the mornings, washing, dressing, toileting etc.

Assist and support residents in making choices from the food menu and providing encouragement and support at mealtimes.

To assist with the care of residents clothing and laundry.

To develop and maintain good relationships with the resident and their family/friends.

Activities / Community Involvement

Encourage residents to participate in a program of recreational and social activities.

Assist and support residents in maintaining links with their friends and other groups in the community.

Accompany residents on outings including accompanying to hospital for appointments at times when emergency hospital treatment is required.

Communication / Team Work

To participate in daily hand over reports using both verbal and written records to ensure good communication is maintained within the team.

To co-operate with the duty rota schedule so as to ensure adequate staffing, and be flexible at times due to the changing needs of the facility and the residents.

To work with other members of staff to ensure that harmonious relationships are maintained within the team.

To attend team meetings.

Health & Safety

To help maintain a safe environment by complying with the Trust's Health & Safety at work policy and procedures.

To assist in identifying risk whilst working to create an enabling environment for the residents where they can be encouraged to achieve maximum independence.

The care assistant must comply with the Trust's No Smoking Policy.

Training

To participate in induction training and undertake the role of a primary worker having specific responsibility for a group of residents.

To participate in formal supervision.

To undertake training identified to ensure care staff are fully equipped to carry out the duties of the post, promote personal development and ensure a quality service is provided to residents.

The care assistant must maintain the confidentiality of information about residents, staff and other Trust business in accordance with the Code of confidentiality and the Data Protection Act

Environmental Cleaning Strategy

The Trusts Environmental Cleaning Strategy recognizes the key principle that "Cleanliness matters is everyone's responsibility, not just the cleaners" Whilst there are staff employed who are responsible for cleaning services, all Trust staff have a responsibility to ensure a clean, comfortable, safe environment for patients, clients, residents, visitors, staff and members of the general public.

Infection Prevention and Control

The Belfast Trust is committed to reducing Healthcare associated infections (HCAIs) and all staff have a part to play in making this happen. Staff must comply with all policies in relation to Infection Prevention and Control and with ongoing reduction strategies. Standard Infection Prevention and Control Precautions must be used at all times to ensure the safety of patients and staff.

This includes:-

Cleaning hands either with soap and water or a hand sanitiser at the appropriate times (WHO '5 moments');

Using the correct '7 step' hand hygiene technique;

Being 'bare below the elbows' when in a clinical environment;

Following Trust policies and the Regional Infection Control Manual (found on intranet);

Wearing the correct Personal Protective Equipment (PPE);

Ensuring correct handling and disposal of waste (including sharps) and laundry;

Ensuring all medical devices (equipment) are decontaminated appropriately i.e. cleaned, disinfected and/or sterilised;

Ensuring compliance with High Impact Interventions.

PERSONNEL SPECIFICATION

Residential Home

(a) Certificate in Community Care

or Social Care or NVQ Level II Care/QCF Level 2 Diploma in Health and Social Care or BTEC National Certificate in Care (Social Care)

Or equivalent

PLUS

1 year's caring experience in a Residential/Nursing/Community/Day Care/Voluntary Sector setting

OR

(b) 18 months caring experience in a Residential/Nursing/Community/Day Care/Voluntary Sector setting

And

Must undertake the QCF Level 2 Diploma in Health and Social Care within 12 months of commencing post

Be eligible and register with the NISCC on appointment.

Other If you are an overseas national who would require a Certificate of Sponsorship from the Trust to Work in the UK, under the current Home Office Immigration Rules, we would not be able to offer this. The starting salary for this role (£24,071, based on full time hours) is below the minimum threshold for skilled worker sponsorship (£25,000).

In order to be considered you must have at least 2 years relevant and comparable NHS/UK experience equivalent to Band 3 level.
