Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust is looking for dynamic, dedicated Band 5 Staff Nurses to join the Acute Cardiac Care Unit (ACCU) at Harefield Hospital. ACCU consists of two active cardiology wards, Oak and Acorn, comprising approximately 40 overnight beds and day-case trolleys. We care for Level 1 and Level 2 patients undergoing complex cardiac investigations and interventions, including Primary and Elective Angioplasty, Electrophysiology studies, TAVI, Ablations, and Pacemaker/Device implantations. Main duties of the job

As a Band 5 Staff Nurse on ACCU, you will deliver high-quality, evidence-based nursing care from patient admission through to safe discharge. You will perform comprehensive physical assessments, monitor vital signs, and initiate tailored care plans for cardiac patients. Daily duties involve undertaking complex clinical procedures, managing invasive cardiac monitoring, and administering prescribed medications, including blood and blood product transfusions. Working alongside a large multidisciplinary team—including Consultants, Clinical Nurse Specialists, and Allied Health Professionals—you will advocate for your patients, ensuring their dignity, cultural beliefs, and human rights are always upheld. You will communicate sensitive or complex clinical information clearly, maintain precise digital patient records, and participate in handovers. Furthermore, you will help supervise junior staff, act as a mentor or preceptor to students and newly qualified nurses, and at times take management responsibility for co-ordinating shift care on the ward.

The post holder is wholly accountable for their clinical practice in accordance with the NMC Code of Conduct and local Trust policies. You will strictly adhere to infection prevention and control standards, health and safety regulations, risk management protocols, and the safe custody and administration of medicines. Continuous professional development is strongly encouraged; you will build a personal portfolio, engage in clinical supervision, and complete post-specific competencies to expand your skill set. Candidates must be a Registered Nurse (RN1/RN12) on the NMC register. You should possess up-to-date knowledge of current professional issues, basic life support skills, and the ability to work effectively under pressure in a fast-paced environment. Excellent interpersonal skills, a positive and flexible approach to internal shift rotation (including day/night duties and unsocial hours), and a commitment to delivering compassionate, person-centered care are essential for success in this role
