To be an efficient and flexible member of the Histopathology laboratory team providing a high quality diagnostic service through supporting the scientific and technical activities of qualified members of staff.
To have responsibility to assist queries within specimen reception cross site within the BCPS, the Hub site is based at Wolverhampton, receiving work from Walsall Manor Hospitals, Russells Hall Hospital Dudley and Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospital.
To work within the written Policies and Procedures of the Department especially in relation to Health & Safety and Quality
Main duties of the job
To participate in the routine duties of the Histopathology Department, as part of a team, under the direction and supervision of Medical Laboratory Assistants ensuring compliance with Departmental Policies and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
Take part in the all areas of the Laboratory.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
To manage the BCPS Cellular Pathology Reception and pre and post analytical areas of the Laboratory in accordance with pre-determined policies, procedures, priorities and in the most cost-effective manner whilst maintaining a quality service.
Working with Senior BMSs in assisting with the supervision of reception and overseeing the the day-to-day workflow within this area ensuring adequate resources are in place
Attend Specimen Reception meetings across BCPS sites as well as other relevant meetings including Senior and Governance meetings for Cellular Pathology.
Assist new projects, process changes and the introduction of new innovations including IT systems and equipment
When relevant, be prepared to travel and be present in Specimen Reception sites across BCPS.
Maintain stock and supplies.
The provision of a high standard of administrative and clerical work within the section.
Liaison with the laboratory scientific and technical staff to ensure a smooth delivery of work for the analytical systems
Ensuring appropriate arrangements for dealing with enquiries and requests from a wide variety of sources (e.g. G.P.s, consultants, other departments, patients and relatives) and for the reception of patients for consultation and tests in the Department are in place.

- GCSE Mathematics and English or equivalent and a basic science based qualification
- IBMS Certificate of competence/ Foundation degree in Biomedical science
