An exciting opportunity has come up within the East and SouthEast London (ESEL) Pathology Network, for an enthusiastic Assistant Transfusion Practitioner at Newham University Hospital who shares our vision of a high-quality transfusion service.
Previous experience or knowledge of the blood transfusion process is desirable but not essential as full training will be provided for the right candidate.
The post holder will assist and support site-based Specialist Transfusion Practitioners in the provision of efficient and effective service by co-ordinating key administrative functions to ensure effective service to the highest possible standard.
The post holder will be responsible for monitoring closely the traceability of all issued units daily and will assist the clinical departments with the return of all traceability labels to the blood transfusion laboratory in a timely fashion.
The post holder will be responsible for traceability data entry & extraction and will support in the production of performance / compliance reports. In addition, this role will assist and will support the Specialist Transfusion Practitioners, as instructed, in writing minutes of meetings held at respective sites.

- To be responsible for data entry, to support with the production of performance / compliance reports, managing transfusion training and competency records and access to blood fridges by trained staff by using specific laboratory software. • To support with data entry for Blood stock management
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- To monitor closely the traceability of all issued units on a daily basis and to assist the clinical departments with the return of all traceability labels to the blood transfusion laboratory in a timely fashion. • To have good IT skills to use the laboratory information management system and Microsoft Office software (Excel, word, Access and PowerPoint) • To support the site Specialist Transfusion Practitioners, as instructed, in writing minutes of meetings held at respective sites. • To assist and support the Transfusion Practitioners, as instructed, in undertaking clinical audits (local and national), preparing resources for training and assessment of clinical staff, gathering information for investigation of clinical incidents, monitoring / follow up of blood and blood product wastage, transfusion related non-compliances and to assist in blood fridge training and related competency assessments. • To Support the implementation of good transfusion practice Trust wide, through the organisations frameworks for clinical governance / risk management and in line with the SHOT safe practice notices / alerts related to transfusion, clinical and laboratory elements of MHRA Blood Safety and Quality Regulations (BSQR), CQC and HSC2007/001 Better Blood Transfusion 3 requirements from Department of Health (NBTC) • To assist with the development, implementation and delivery of mandatory blood transfusion training (E-learning), education and related practical competency assessments for all clinical staff at Barts Health • To Support the laboratory and Trust with the elements of the BSQR, which extends to clinical areas. • To Support key members of the Trust Transfusion Team (TTT) and Hospital Transfusion Committee (HTC); taking forward action plans and programmes of work arising from the TTT and HTC that require implementation in the clinical areas. • To assist Transfusion practitioners with internal & external reporting of incidents to haemo-vigilance Scheme (SHOT / SABRE) • The post holder may be required to work on any of the Trust sites as required by the service.
