Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen to develop a motivated, enthusiastic and dynamic Alcohol Care Team across East Sussex Healthcare Trust, for Up To 12 months Fixed Term Contract or Secondment opportunity to cover Maternity Leave.

The service will be across the two main hospital sites, to support patients with alcohol misuse, working closely with the gastroenterology team. The service will develop, under the guidance of an Alcohol Specialist Nurse Team Manager (Band 7), to improve the care and management of patients with alcohol use disorder, focusing on avoiding unnecessary hospital admission.

Under the supervision of an Alcohol Specialist Nurse, you will be responsible for assessment, implementation and evaluation of patient care for those who present with alcohol misuse and alcohol related injuries. You will offer advice to Trust staff on the care and management of patients with alcohol use disorder, deliver training to staff on the management of alcohol dependency and addiction and will be responsible for holding a caseload of individual patients who are not engaging in the community but continue to come to hospital and patients who are pre or post detox.

You will need to have substantial and relevant post registration experience previous relevant experience in an Acute setting. Experience of working with Gastroenterology patients in an inpatient setting. Mentorship Module – or recognised Teaching/Assessing qualification.

  • Able to manage the physical and emotional demands of the role, including moving and handling of patients, able to concentrate to provide clinical care, calculation of drug dosages and communication of distressing or unwelcome information
  • Flexibility in working hours and patterns
  • Full driving licence and access to a vehicle (for domiciliary community role) and ability to travel between sites

Experience

Essential

  • Experience in nursing care, knowledge and expertise relevant to the clinical area within NHS or relevant health care organisation
  • Experience in the take charge role and be able to lead a shift in the clinical area, demonstrating the ability to manage the clinical area, lead people and deal with emergencies and queries effectively

Desirable

  • Experience in leading a team or service change/QI project

Qualifications / Training

Essential

  • Registered Nurse and hold active registration with Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC)
  • Degree level qualification relevant to role
  • Professional qualification and training to lead the clinical team with relevant knowledge and skills for specialist area
  • Evidence of mandatory and statutory essential training skills, for example, Basic Life Support, manual handling, infection control, fire etc

  • Management or leadership qualification or training
  • Education and training qualification
  • Quality improvement training and qualification

  • Professional clinical knowledge skills and skills that demonstrate the ability to assess, plan, develop and implement programmes of care
  • Skills to assess and interpret complex needs of patients and able to give expert advice and guidance
  • Clinical skills and competence relevant to role to support innovative, evidence based practice.
  • Ability to apply professional judgement and problem solve and lead discussions within the team to resolve complex issues
