Job summary

An opportunity has arisen within the Gynaecology nursing team at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust for a Urogynaecology Clinical Nurse Specialist. You will be joining a team of specialist nurses, allied healthcare professionals and consultants who are committed to providing compassionate, evidence-based individual care for women with bladder and bowel dysfunction and pelvic organ prolapse.

This is an exciting post for a person that is passionate about developing expert skills in the field of Urogynaecology. We are looking for an individual who is forward-thinking, looking for a new challenge and who provides high standards of care. It is an ideal opportunity for a registered nurse currently working at senior band 5 or Band 6 who wishes to develop, enhance and expand their existing skills. You will have previous gynaecology nursing experience, be motivated, inspirational and looking for a new challenge

You will provide clinically excellent and compassionate care. You must have excellent communication skills to engage with patients and colleagues at all levels. You will have the opportunity to further develop your skills, knowledge and autonomous practice.

This role is Countywide with the urogynaecology and pessary service provision currently offered across three sites; Alexandra Hospital, Kidderminster Treatment Centre and Worcestershire Royal Hospital. You may be required to attend either site as the service needs demand.

Main duties of the job

To provide competent and skilled care of women with Urogynaecological problems working within a multidisciplinary team. Care will be provided under both direct and indirect supervision, with due regard for local and national guidelines

The Urogynaecology specialist nurse will sit within the Specialist Nurse rota and be available to attend specialist clinics across the county Monday to Friday to ensure Urogynaecology patients' needs are met.

To assist with the further development of and provide day to day clinical care within the Specialist Urogynaecology Service for Worcestershire.

To provide effective leadership to more junior staff and to act as a positive role model.

As a member of the gynaecology directorate multidisciplinary team to have responsibility for ensuring assessment of care needs, development and evaluation of programmes of care ensuring the delivery of high-quality care to patients.

To liaise with all members of the multi-disciplinary team in primary and secondary and co-ordinate all aspects of care in the best interests of the patient and family.

To contribute to the continuing development of practice to all members of the directorate. To supervise junior staff and to teach qualified and unqualified staff as appropriate.

Job responsibilities

JOB PURPOSE:

To liaise closely with the Lead Urogynaecology nurse and any external mentors to ensure training needs are being met.

To act in the best interests of the patient in situations where they are unable to make an informed choice for themselves.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Clinical

With indirect supervision to be responsible for the day-to-day care of urogynaecological patients visiting the department. Assessment of care needs to include simple and complex clinical problems of the patient.

Specialist nursing duties may include but are not limited to:

Pre and post operative visiting of Urogynaecology patients

Management of women with vaginal pessary including audit and database

Ante natal and post-natal visiting as requested by Obstetric team

Enhance the communication link between primary and secondary care multidisciplinary team

Assist with patients positioning, and placement of lines for urodynamic testing.

Carry out simple Urodynamic testing including reporting of results.

Perform stand-alone flow studies

Perform bladder scanning

Insertion / changing of vaginal pessary for prolapse management

Teaching of Clean intermittent self-catheterisation

Review of conservative management pathways as part of a planned programme of care

Attendance at monthly MDT meeting

Responsible for the implementation and evaluation of programmes of care for the patient whose needs may be predictable or unpredictable and / or unstable and changing to ensure delivery of high standards of care

To attend and complete any courses required by the trust or the BSUGs to ensure safe clinical development and competency

To identify the requirements of the patient needs in elective / emergency situations and have the knowledge and skills to act accordingly

To establish and maintain effective communication with individuals and groups about difficult or complex matters to overcome any problems in communication and to ensure that appropriate information is shared, and patient needs are met.

To support and involve patients / clients / carers relatives and liaise with and coordinate other members of the primary and secondary care multidisciplinary team in the planning and delivery of individualised care.

To be responsible for maintaining patients records within agreed standards to ensure the care management plan is communicated to patients and other members of the multidisciplinary team.

Adopt a positive approach to infection control, actively contributing to infection control policy and practice.

2. Management / Leadership

To contribute to the effective use of physical, financial and human resources

To provide training when requested to new registered and non-registered staff i.e HCAs and student nurses. To provide advice and support ensuring safe and effective care and that educational needs are met.

Contribute to discussion, debate and influence change in practice underpinned by research that is evidence based. This will include assisting the lead nurse in development of guidelines and policy with specific reference to endometriosis.

Act as a team leader where appropriate ensuring effective teamwork and promote healthy working relations with support from mentor /trainer.

Monitor and maintain own and others health, safety and security

To work within an ethical framework utilising the NMC code of conduct, defined policies, procedures, standards and protocols of the department, organisation to promote safe and effective evidence-based practice and contribute to quality improvement.

To understand and take ownership of own training pathway with due consideration of the requirements of the BSUG

In the absence of the Lead Urogynaecology nurse when asked to take charge of an identified area of work and manage the standards of care and daily responsibilities, including work allocation, deployment and supervision of junior staff to ensure smooth running of the area.

3. Education and Continuing Professional Development

To maintain competency and produce evidence demonstrating continued professional development in the role of the specialist nurse for urogynaecology.

To be conversant and comply with trust policies and regulations ensure attendance at trust mandatory training sessions and those deemed necessary to role. To identify with Lead Nurse and Consultant when further competency / development is required.

To participate in personal / career development plan to maintain and develop attitudes, skills and knowledge facilitating personal and professional growth to maximise contribution to and quality of service delivery.

To support the personal and professional growth of new, registered and non-registered staff, in order to maximise their contribution to and quality of service delivery.

To participate fully in the implementation of staff personal development plans to facilitate on-going development.

4. Quality / Research and Development

To contribute to the audit of Urogynaecology services and develop a working knowledge of reporting system and quality initiatives within field of Urogynaecology.

Demonstrate research awareness and ability to participate in and regularly support on-going research in nursing / medical practice, clinical trials, medical research and equipment testing.

To work within an ethical and legal framework utilising the NMC code of professional conduct, defined policies, procedures, standards and protocols of the department / organisation to promote safe and effective evidence-based practice and contribute to quality improvement.

To work within the guidance described within the BSUG accreditation statement.

Propose changes within own area of work using evidence-based practice.

Report and investigate when delegated incidents in relation to urogynaecology nurse role and services using the DATIX reporting system.

5. Professional

To always maintain a professional attitude developing the role of the nurse in the best interest of the patient and profession in accordance with Nursing & Midwifery Council Standards and Guidelines.

To be aware of personal and professional development. To attend courses and conferences as recommended and approved by the Lead Urogynaecology nurse

Participate in research projects where appropriate, report findings within a multidisciplinary framework.

Implement research where appropriate.

6. Personnel.

Participate in devising induction programmes for newly appointed staff.

To assist the Department manager in monitoring staff performance when requested.

To assist Lead Urogynaecology nurse in the maintenance of day-to-day discipline within the department.

To inform the Lead nurse / responsible consultant of staff failing to meet the required standard of performance, and taking appropriate action where required.
