Job overview

We are looking for an experienced sonographer who is interested in expanding their scope of practice to work within our friendly team. This post would suit someone with excellent obstetric and gynaecology scanning skills and we welcome applications from registered sonographers with a Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma or Masters in Medical Ultrasound.

Ashford & St Peter’s NHS Trust Maternity & Gynaecology is based across two sites with the main department situated at St. Peter’s Hospital and a smaller one at Ashford Hospital.

We have 8 ultrasound rooms both sites, 7 of which have GE VolusonE8/E10 machines and one Samsung W10.  A range of obstetric examinations from early pregnancy to term are performed, including maternal and fetal Doppler studies, together with 3D TV gynaecology scans (training can be provided for these techniques).  We independently report and triage all our obstetric and gynaecological examinations.  CPD is actively encouraged and supported.

We are committed to the delivery of a high quality service; the successful candidates will have the chance to make full use of their experience and skill in a supportive environment. We are a friendly multidisciplinary team with three obstetric consultants who specialise in fetal medicine, maternal medicine and multiple pregnancies and are fully committed to the continuing development of our dynamic department. We also have close ties with our tertiary referral centre at St. George’s Hospital, London.

Main duties of the job

Perform and report obstetric and gynaecology scans in a professional and caring manner in keeping with the Trust Values.

Support the Lead Sonographer in the day to day running of an efficient service and give support to other members of the team and trainee sonographers.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To perform and independently report on a range of diagnostic ultrasound obstetric and gynaecology examinations in line with national and departmental guidelines, in order to provide a high quality service for Ashford and St Peter’s NHS Trust.

To run the department in the absence of the Lead Sonographer on a day to day basis.

To maintain established clinical standards, particularly in respect to patient care, clinical risk and Health and Safety.

To liaise effectively with other departments and health care professionals as necessary.

To participate in auditing, reporting, presentation and administration of the ultrasound service as required.

To participate in the practical and theoretical training of student sonographers.

To understand the implications of the Health and Safety at Work Act, and ensure a safe environment for patients, visitors and staff according to the Trust’s Health and Safety Policy.
