JOB DESCRIPTION

POST: Ultrasonographer

BAND: 6

LOCATION: RBHSC Imaging, Belfast Health & Social Care Trust

DIRECTORATE: Imaging, Medical Physics & Outpatients Division

REPORTS TO: Radiology Site Lead / USS Lead Radiographer

RESPONSIBLE TO: Clinical and Radiology Site Leads

Job Summary / Main Purpose

Assist in the provision of the Ultrasound service as a core worker, with the requirement to rotate though other Imaging modalities within the department as required.

Main Duties / Responsibilities

For each of the following, the postholder will

Demonstrate and maintain high standards of clinical Imaging and patient focused care with particular reference to Ultrasound Imaging.

To perform a range of ultrasound procedures which may include abdominal and pelvic sonography, musculoskeletal sonography and vascular sonography.

Supervise radiographic staff, students and support staff in Ultrasound and other areas of the radiography service as required.

Help identify training needs and assist in an effective training programme.

Responsible for the care, cleanliness and use of Imaging equipment in accordance with department policies. To report and record all environmental defects, equipment faults and incidents to the line manager.

To perform general radiographic duties, including all specialised Imaging modalities within the Directorate to preset quality standards.

To assist in the operational management and co-ordination of resources in the department.

To actively participate in the Directorate’s Quality Assurance Programme, including responsibility for the operational aspects of quality assurance in Ultrasound.

Communicate effectively with patients, staff and the public including those with specific needs e.g. those with learning difficulties and challenging behaviours

Undertake the duties of the post in accordance with the Trust and department policies including standard operating procedures (SOP), Health and Safety at Work Order (1978), and to act as an IRMER duty holder when required under the guidelines in the Trust’s Employer’s Procedures.

When required, comply with Ionising Radiations Regulations (N.I.) 2017 and Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations (N.I.) 2018 and observe departmental Local Rules and protocols involving Ionising radiation.

Take responsibility for their own professional development in the role, in accordance with HCPC professional Continuous Professional Development (CPD) requirements.

Participate in the on-call/shift/out-of-hours duty/cross-site working as required by the service.

Participate in weekend working as part of a normal working week as required by the service.

To perform any other duties in the Radiology Directorate deemed appropriate to the grade by the Radiology Site Lead.

PROFESSIONAL

To perform the following scans to a high standard in accordance with directorate protocols and guidelines for ultrasound:

RBHSC – Paediatric cranial / abdominal / pelvic / musculoskeletal / small parts / DDH.

Service developments may lead to additional scanning opportunities.

To perform and maintain high standards of clinical imaging and personalised patient care in accordance with Directorate and Trust standards.

To assist the Ultrasound Lead and Lead Radiologist in any duties relating to the provision of an efficient and effective ultrasound service.

To be responsible for the care, cleanliness and use of equipment in the work area in line with Directorate policies. To report and record all equipment faults to the line manager.

To undertake duties on rotation as required by the Imaging Site Lead and Team Lead Radiographers.

To take responsibility for their own professional development in the role, in accordance with professional CPD requirements, with evidence of an interest of further study.

ADMINISTRATION

Maintain accurate records of all examinations

Assist in compiling and reviewing SOPs relating to the ultrasound service.

Assist in the daily operational management of the Imaging department as required.

Promote good interpersonal relationships within and between departments through effective communication.

PERSONNEL

Participate in the Staff Development review programme to identify training needs to your Line Manager/Imaging Site Lead.

EDUCATIONAL

Maintain and regularly update individual CPD in keeping with the demands of the post

To participate in multi-disciplinary Clinical Audit and Directorate QA program.

To maintain and improve performance through personal audit and peer review.

To assist in the teaching and training of all staff involved in ultrasound and other imaging modalities.

Undertake mandatory training as required by the Trust.

Environmental Cleaning Strategy

Infection Prevention and Control

The Belfast Trust is committed to reducing Healthcare associated infections (HCAIs) and all staff have a part to play in making this happen. Staff must comply with all policies in relation to Infection Prevention and Control and with ongoing reduction strategies. Standard Infection Prevention and Control Precautions must be used at all times to ensure the safety of patients and staff.

Experience B.Sc. (Hons) Diagnostic Radiography or DCRR or equivalent qualification in radiographic practice recognised by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)

HCPC Registration at time of appointment.

Minimum of 2 years recent radiographic experience, post qualification, in a hospital with a wide range of modern Imaging modalities and designated paediatric Imaging.

1 years’ experience in Paediatric ultrasound practice.

Completion of or in the process of attaining a postgraduate qualification in the technical / clinical aspects of abdominal ultrasound.

Hold a current full driving licence which is valid for use in the UK and have access to a car on appointment.
