Job summary

This post offers an excellent opportunity to develop a broad range of skills across both Obstetrics and Gynaecology within a busy, supportive and friendly department. As a Tier 1 doctor, you will gain experience in all aspects of the specialty, including labour ward, antenatal clinics, antenatal and postnatal ward rounds, and the care of women on the gynaecology ward, with responsibilities appropriate to your level of training and competence.

You will also have the opportunity to develop your surgical and outpatient experience through participation in gynaecology clinics, day case and inpatient operating lists, and the acute gynaecology service, working alongside experienced registrars and consultants who are committed to education and clinical development.

The successful applicant will join our 1 in 8 Tier 1 on-call rota, providing experience in the assessment and management of acute obstetric and gynaecological presentations, including nights and weekends. An example on-call rota and weekly departmental timetable are included to provide an overview of the variety and balance of work within the department.

Main duties of the job

As a Tier 1 doctor, you will be an integral member of the Obstetrics and Gynaecology multidisciplinary team, providing day-to-day clinical support across both specialties under the supervision of senior registrars and consultants. You will work closely with the on-call team, assisting in the assessment and management of women presenting with obstetric and gynaecological conditions, including those attending the Pregnancy Assessment Unit and Emergency Gynaecology service.

Your role will include undertaking clinical assessments appropriate to your level of training, performing practical procedures such as venepuncture and intravenous cannulation, requesting and reviewing investigations, and following through clinical management plans. You will support consultant and registrar ward rounds by documenting clinical reviews, implementing management plans and ensuring timely completion of outstanding clinical tasks.

You will gain valuable experience in the management of obstetric and gynaecological emergencies, assisting with emergency procedures such as caesarean sections and working as part of the multidisciplinary team to deliver safe, effective patient care. During outpatient clinics and theatre sessions, you will support senior clinicians while developing your own clinical, surgical and communication skills through supervised practice.
