We are delighted to be able to offer an opportunity for a highly motivated, ambitious individual to join our well integrated team.
The post would optimally suit trainees who are considering a future in paediatric medicine or surgery and want to explore this as an area of specialisation. Ideally, applicants would have completed Foundation training. The post will provide a solid basis from which to apply for an ST post.
The post is available from July 2026-August 2027.
The individual will be expected to perform duties and take clinical responsibilities of ST1-2. Candidates must possess full GMC registration at time of application.
The post will be fixed to Paediatric surgery. The successful applicant will join an on call SHO rota which includes nightshifts, weekends and long days. They will be exposed to specialty and general paediatrics.

The successful individual will be expected to perform duties and take clinical responsibilities of ST1-2. The post will provide a solid basis from which to apply for an ST post. The role will be based at the Great North Children’s Hospital.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Clinical:
- Assessing patients, diagnosing and escalating to registrar / consultant level when necessary. Taking bloods ordering other tests including MRI, x-ray etc. The duties will include attending relevant MDTs.
Administrative:
- Successful applicants will be expected to carry out all administrative tasks allocated to them by the Medical Education Manager, or clinical supervisor, including keeping of inpatient records, ordering investigations and receiving results.
Research:
- The medical education department has a strong reputation for excellent medical education and there are many ongoing projects. The high volume of educational activity performed in the Trust ensures there is a vast opportunity to instigate and perform research/audit projects. Such activity is encouraged, and results presented at regional and national meetings.

- Experience of supervising junior staff.
- Ability to teach clinical skills.
Education and Qualifications
Essential
- Primary Medical Qualification.
- Full GMC registration or eligibility to obtain this within 3 months (or within 6 months for non-EEA applicants).
Clinical Skills and Knowledge
Essential
- Previous NHS experience – minimum of 4 months
- Paediatric medicine/surgery experience.
- Good history & examination skills.
- Able to formulate a working diagnosis.
- Able to order appropriate investigations.
- Image interpretation relevant to practice.
- Knows when to appropriately seek assistance from a senior colleague.
Clinical Governance, Audit and Research
Essential
- Experience of audit projects.
Management and Administration Experience
Essential
- Ability to run a service and participate in management process.
- Committed to share in professional, managerial and teaching responsibilities necessary to fulfil the obligations of the Directorate to the Trust and its workforce.
- Able to communicate well with patients and colleagues.
- An understanding of Clinical Governance.
Desirable
- Proven management and administration ability.
