The Maxillofacial Unit is a self-contained department with purpose-built facilities. It was completed in March 2011 and comprises a reception area, 6 single clinical rooms, a 4-chair polyclinic and a minor procedure room. It has its own dedicated x-ray facility with intraoral, OPG, and Cone Beam CT. The department is moving towards being fully digital with a model scanner, an intra-oral scanner, facial scanner and Dolphin software. There is a state-of-the-art Maxillofacial Laboratory situated on the floor above the clinical area.
All inpatient surgery is carried out at the William Harvey Hospital and patients are bedded on the dedicated Head and Neck ward (Rotary Ward) adjacent to the department. Day stay surgery is performed on the three main sites, William Harvey Hospital, Kent and Canterbury Hospital and Queen Elizabeth Queen Mary Hospital, Margate. Outpatient clinics are carried out at the 3 sites above and at Buckland Hospital, Dover. Small satellite departments are located at the Kent & Canterbury and at the Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Hospitals.
Main duties of the job
The main duties are located at the William Harvey Hospital. On occasions the Trust doctor will be required to visit the Kent & Canterbury Hospital, Canterbury and the Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Hospital, Margate for day surgery and outpatient clinics.
Normal daily duties will include attendance at Out-Patients clinics for new and review patients and joint Orthognathic Clinics as well as delivering minor oral surgery under local anaesthetic. It will also involve the day to day care of patients admitted for maxillofacial surgery, the attendance at Main and Day Surgery operating theatre lists. Experience will include assisting and performing dento-alveolar surgery and assisting with salivary glands surgery, cancer surgery, freeflap surgery and orthognathic surgery. On-Call is a 1:8 shift system shared with DCT in oral & maxillofacial surgery at the William Harvey Hospital, covering the dedicated head & neck ward, treating casualty and trauma work as required as well as attendance at emergency operating sessions.
