The NLFT Trauma Service at the Tavistock centre is an innovative, multi-modal specialist service offering group and individual therapy as a part of a phase-based approach to complex trauma. All clinical work is held within a psychoanalytic frame but the service makes use of different trauma modalities as part of a trauma – informed approach. Trauma consultations may lead to individual weekly work, and / or a variety of group options including psychoeducation groups, trauma art therapy, trauma focused mentalization group, trauma yoga groups and a women’s and men’s groups for non-recent child sexual abuse.
We have specialised in working with non-recent child sexual abuse as well as with other forms of developmental, attachment and adult traumas. We have clinical placements for qualified therapists as a part of a two year course on psychodynamic trauma which is kitemarked by the British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC).
We are looking for a BPC accredited psychodynamic or psychoanalytic psychotherapist or art therapist with a psychodynamic background with experience working with complex trauma. Ideally we would hope the therapist also has training or experience in other modalities such as EMDR, MBT or group work.
Main duties of the job
To offer introductory meetings to patients as the first contact with the service to commence stabilization work.
To provide 4 session consultations to adult patients who have experienced complex trauma.
To hold a caseload of individuals within the service.
To provide case management for patients; this will include coordinating care around the patient, supporting patients to access appropriate support networks and ensuring that such networks remain effective for the individual’s patient’s recovery.
To liaise and work jointly with other health and social care staff, from a range of agencies, in the care provided to clients.
To ensure good communications with referrers e.g. discharge discussions/letters, onward referrals etc. around the GP’s ongoing relationships with and management of patient care.
To co-facilitate groups in the service, including psycho-education groups.

Essential
- Skill and knowledge in safeguarding and risk management
- Personal duty of care in relation to equipment or resources
- Basic keyboard skills for updating client records
- Ability to manage own clinical case load
Desirable
- Understanding of principles and methods of clinical audit, research and service evaluation
Knowledge
Essential
- Skills for assessing and communicating complex client conditions and applying appropriate clinical treatments
- Understanding of the importance of trauma informed approaches
- Awareness of the importance of understanding the impact of race/intersectionality on patients mental health and on working as clinicians
Experience
Essential
- Evidence of clinical experience of working with client population.
- A clear track record of managing complexity and risk whilst maintaining high standards of service delivery
- A comprehensive understanding of the changing NHS and Social Care environment and the challenges they face
- Experience of working at all levels of the system with internal and external stakeholders
- Expertise of managing and treating the client group
Desirable
- Experience of involvement in project work e.g. quality improvement
- Experience in facilitating therapy groups
- Experience in supporting peer involvement
- Community engagement experience
- Knowledge and experience implementing outcome measures with a trauma patient population
Qualifications
Essential
- Degree level as a minimum plus developed specialist and practical knowledge equating to postgraduate degree/ Masters level
- BPC recognised post-graduate qualification as a Psychodynamic or Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist
