We are excited to offer an opportunity for a Trainee Respiratory and Sleep Healthcare Scientist to join our friendly and supportive Clinical Measurement team at University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust (UHDB).

This is a development post where you will gain practical experience in respiratory and sleep diagnostics while completing a structured training programme, portfolio, and professional qualification.

You will play an important role in delivering high-quality, patient-centred diagnostic services while developing the skills to become a qualified Healthcare Scientist.

Main duties of the job

As a trainee, you will work under supervision to develop competence in a wide range of respiratory investigations and clinical skills.

Your duties will include:

  • Performing respiratory diagnostic tests including spirometry, lung volumes, gas transfer, and reversibility testing
  • Supporting sleep diagnostics and therapy, including limited sleep studies and CPAP treatment.
  • Preparing, calibrating and maintaining specialist equipment
  • Monitoring patient safety, comfort and wellbeing during investigations
  • Communicating clearly and sensitively with patients, including those with complex needs
  • Supporting departmental administration processes including patient pathways and bookings
  • Maintaining accurate patient records and data entry onto clinical systems
  • Assisting with other clinical measurements (e.g. ECGs) where required

You will complete a structured training programme, including competency assessments, a clinical logbook and work towards a recognised professional qualification.

Rotation across UHDB sites and community diagnostic centres is an essential part of the role. Closing date:02 July 2026 Interview date:16 July 2026
