Theatre Practitioner - Recovery

Job summary

We are looking for a compassionate, motivated and clinically competent Band 5 Recovery Nurse or Operating Department Practitioner to join the Post-Anaesthetic Care Unit (PACU) at The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust. This is an excellent opportunity for a registered practitioner with a passion for delivering safe, person-centred care to patients in the immediate post-operative period. The successful applicant will be responsible for providing high-quality recovery care to patients undergoing a wide range of elective and emergency surgical procedures. Working within a supportive multidisciplinary team, you will assess, monitor and manage patients as they emerge from anaesthesia, ensuring their comfort, safety and timely progression through the perioperative pathway. In addition to your primary duties within Recovery, you may on occasion be required to support other areas of the theatre department, provided you are suitably trained to do so. You will be supported through ongoing professional development, training opportunities and a collaborative team ethos aligned with the Trusts commitment to delivering excellent patient care.

Main duties of the job

Provide safe, effective, and compassionate care to patients in the Post-Anaesthetic Care Unit (PACU) following elective and emergency surgical procedures. Assess, monitor, and manage patients emerging from anaesthesia, including airway support, pain management, haemodynamic monitoring, and postoperative comfort. Recognise and respond promptly to clinical deterioration, escalating concerns to senior staff and the anaesthetic team as appropriate. Maintain accurate and timely documentation in line with Trust policies and professional standards. Ensure all equipment and monitoring devices are checked, prepared, and used safely, escalating faults or concerns appropriately. Contribute to maintaining high standards of infection prevention and patient safety, adhering to all relevant guidelines and protocols. Support the smooth and efficient flow of patients through the recovery pathway, communicating effectively with theatre teams, ward staff, and other clinical departments. Provide support to patients and their families, offering reassurance, information, and compassionate care during the postoperative period. Participate in training, supervision, and development activities to maintain competence and contribute to the learning environment within the department. Work collaboratively within the multidisciplinary team, contributing to service improvement initiatives and upholding the Trusts values in all aspects of practice.
