Main duties of the job

Wharfedale Theatres provide day surgery to a wide variety of specialities within 4 theatres which include ophthalmics, colorectal, urology, plastics/maxillofacial, gynaecology, breast and ENT. As a team leader you will continue to maintain clinical practice and there may be a requirement for weekend working and night duty if needed. The successful applicant will have line managerial responsibilities for the multidisciplinary staff within the Perioperative team. We require a dynamic and motivated Senior Practitioner with outstanding knowledge, skills and experience in the relevant Surgical Specialties to provide excellent patient care. The successful applicant will be expected to collaborate with other theatre suites and the trust to provide patient centred care. You will be supported & facilitated by Matron, Senior Management, Education and Business Team to lead and contribute to the quality, performance, governance and financial aspects of the role.

Job responsibilities

Job Summary

Applicants must be able to demonstrate their commitment to developing the service, show evidence of clinical leadership & multidisciplinary team working with excellent communication skills and be enthusiastic & have a positive attitude to change. This role also involves teaching, assessing & mentoring various junior members within the unit, so a recognised teaching and assessing qualification is essential. A certification in leadership is desirable. They should also have insight into working on a peripheral site and managing the challenges that presents.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced peri-operative practitioner to lead a dedicated theatre team and support the delivery of high-quality patient care. You will work closely with the Matron to manage staffing, capacity and resources, ensuring the safe and efficient running of the department. Using your leadership, communication and organisational skills, you will support staff development, drive service improvement and contribute to outstanding patient outcomes within a busy and dynamic theatre environment.

What you will bring to the role

The Team Leader will support the Matron/Theatre Manager in the delivery of theatre objectives and will be responsible and accountable for managing capacity and staffing resources over the 24-hour period. The role will be 70% non-clinical management and 30% clinical management.

The Jobholder will carry 24 hour continuing responsibility for the effective and efficient management of the Theatre(s) and provide management and professional leadership for the peri-operative team. The jobholder is responsible for ensuring the assessment of care needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care are maintained to a high standard. The job holder will manage the administrative and financial aspects of the Theatre(s) and will ensure cost effective use of resources and deployment of staff. Current services comprise 4 theatres. The role requires direct management of approximately 39.3 whole time equivalent Peri-operative Practitioners and support staff. The jobholder is responsible for the department clinical budget.

Qualifications - Essential Criteria

• Registered Nurse (Level 1) or Registered Operating Department Practitioner.
• Recognised teaching/assessing qualification.
• Evidence of continued professional development Willing to undergo training as necessary

Experience - Essential criteria

• Post registration experience at Band 6 or equivalent
• Experience of managing and leading a team
• Budget management Audit & Standard setting
• Understanding of the local and national NHS agenda.
• Understanding of relevant National Service Frameworks.
• Awareness of Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust guidelines and policies.
• Understanding of organisational structures.
• At least 18 months at Band 6 or equivalent.
• Evidence of managerial development.
• Evidence of Clinical audit and standard setting.
• Service development and or change management (essential).
• Budgetary management experience.
• Current issues in healthcare.
• Standards of professional practice.
• Theatre specific practice and governance.
