We have an exciting opportunity for a Band 4 Support Worker to join the Forensic Psychiatry Community Service on a full-time, permanent basis.

The Community Forensic Service delivers a 7-day-a-week service, supporting individuals in their recovery journey while promoting wellbeing, independence, and effective risk management within the community. No two days are the same, making this an ideal opportunity for someone who enjoys working autonomously while building meaningful relationships with service users.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will work with service users and the multi disciplinary team in an enthusiastic and conscientious way to ensure the delivery of high quality recovery focused care and support.

The role will require a real desire and ability to engage with service users in a confident, compassionate and non-judgemental manner, with a primary focus of enabling recovery, well-being and independence.

The service works with adults with diagnoses of mental health conditions and/or learning disability who present with a risk of significant harm to others, to achieve optimal management of risk and minimize re-offending. The service adopts a compassionate and trauma informed approach to promote relapse prevention and recovery, so enabling individuals to realise their full potential and support them to continue to live and build meaningful lives in the community.

You will be joining an experienced team of professionals (psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, occupational therapists, support workers, administrators) who all share a passion and drive for delivering high quality care and treatment to service users with Forensic histories.

The service runs 7 days a week (8am till 8pm), excluding bank holidays, and will include shift work on a rotational basis.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Please note for this role you will be required to travel independently around the county meeting strict time deadlines. You will need to hold a full UK driving licence* and have use of a vehicle. You cannot use public transport for this role as this is not a reliable form of transport and will not allow you to meet service needs. To support the users of the Forensic Psychiatry service with a range of practical, health and social issues.

Implement and maintain psychological and occupational therapy interventions under the guidance of qualified clinicians, monitoring progress and providing feedback to support positive outcomes for service users.

Work with service users in a variety of settings to facilitate access and engagement in a range of community based activities.

Develop positive, trusting relationships with service users while maintaining clear, appropriate, and professional boundaries.

Help users gain access to resources including benefits and welfare rights.

Help to identify early signs of relapse by monitoring users progress, level of functioning and mental state and alert the appropriate staff involved in the individuals care.

To attend meetings internal and external to the Trust when deemed appropriate by the senior clinician involved or team manager.

Maintain adequate records as required by existing procedures, entering appropriate details on the service users case notes as necessary.

Attend and participate in team/care plan review meetings as appropriate.

Develop good working relationships with other organisations that are able to help individuals achieve their goals, including colleges, schools, other training providers and voluntary agencies, the inpatient units and community services.

Managing and prioritising your own diary, workload, and time effectively to meet the needs of service users across the county.

Applicant requirements

Person specification

Experience

Essential

  • Experience of working with people in a mental health or social care setting
  • Experience of working with service users with mental health difficulties and/or learning disability
  • Experience of working in a team environment.
  • Knowledge of interventions used within mental health settings

Desirable

  • Experience of working in the public/ third sector
  • Experience of working with people in the Criminal Justice System

Knowledge and Skills

Essential

  • Good IT skills
  • Good communication skills with a range of people in a range of settings
  • Ability to form therapeutic relationships with clients and carers
  • Ability to manage stress in a work environment
  • Understanding of the principles of Recovery and safeguarding as related to mental health

Desirable

  • Knowledge of Mental Health Act
  • Knowledge of benefits and employment services
  • Knowledge of NHS record keeping systems
  • Knowledge of local community resources

Physical Requirements

Essential

  • Able to transport service users by car and travel with them on public transport
  • Able to work evenings and weekends on a rotational basis depending on service demands
  • Ability to travel independently around Cambridgeshire and Peterborough area meeting required timescales. A Full driving licence and access to a vehicle is essential.

Education and Qualifications

Essential

  • Level of educational attainment to NVQ 3/AS Level or equivalent.

Desirable

  • Training in mental health or social care
  • Willingness to undertake further training
