An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and motivated Radiographer to join the Radiology Directorate at Freeman Hospital as a Band 7 Superintendent Radiographer for General X-ray and Mobile Imaging.

As the professional and operational lead for the Plain Film and Mobile Imaging service, you will play a key role in delivering a high-quality, patient-focused diagnostic imaging service within one of the UK's leading NHS Foundation Trusts. You will provide visible clinical leadership, manage staff and resources, and drive continuous service improvement while maintaining the highest standards of patient care, image quality, safety and governance.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Band 6 Radiographer looking to progress into a leadership role, or an existing Band 7 wishing to further develop their management and strategic skills within a busy tertiary referral centre. The successful candidate will work closely with the Imaging General Manager, Consultant Radiologists and multidisciplinary teams to support service delivery across the Freeman Hospital site while contributing to wider Trust objectives.

The post holder will maintain a clinical presence, ensuring the safe and effective delivery of approximately 280,000 plain film examinations annually, whilst leading on workforce development, quality improvement, equipment management, radiation safety and patient and staff experience.

Main duties of the job

Lead and manage the General X-ray and Mobile Imaging service, ensuring the delivery of a safe, efficient and high-quality diagnostic imaging service for patients and referrers.

Provide professional and clinical leadership to radiographers, assistant practitioners and support staff, promoting excellence in patient care, image quality and service delivery.

Take operational responsibility for staffing, workload management, service performance, waiting lists and resource utilisation across the Plain Film and Mobile Imaging service.

Maintain an active clinical role, undertaking specialist radiographic examinations and supporting complex patient pathways whilst ensuring compliance with IR(ME)R and radiation protection legislation.

The Superintendent Radiographer is responsible for the strategic, operational and clinical leadership of the General X-ray and Mobile Imaging service, ensuring the delivery of a safe, efficient and high-quality imaging service that meets the needs of patients, referrers and the Trust.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Leadership and Patient Care

• Lead the delivery of high-quality General X-ray and Mobile Imaging services.
• Maintain a clinical role and provide expert radiographic knowledge and support.
• Ensure imaging examinations are performed safely, effectively and in accordance with IR(ME)R regulations.
• Promote excellent patient experience, dignity, safety and confidentiality.
• Assess and manage complex clinical cases, adapting imaging techniques to individual patient needs.

Operational Management

• Manage the day-to-day operation of the General X-ray and Mobile Imaging service.
• Oversee workflow, patient access, waiting lists and service performance.
• Ensure appropriate staffing levels and effective deployment of resources.
• Respond to service pressures, equipment failures and unexpected operational issues to maintain service continuity.

Staff Management and Leadership

• Provide leadership and direction to Band 6 Team Leaders, Radiographers, Assistant Practitioners and support staff.
• Lead recruitment, induction, appraisal, performance management and staff development processes.
• Promote a culture of teamwork, accountability, learning and continuous improvement.
• Act as a clinical role model and mentor for the radiographic workforce.

Education and Training

• Lead education, training and competency assessment programmes.
• Support the development of radiographers, students, assistant practitioners and other healthcare professionals.
• Ensure staff maintain competence and comply with mandatory, statutory and professional requirements.
• Foster continuous professional development and lifelong learning.

Equipment and Resource Management

• Be responsible for the safe and effective use of plain film and mobile imaging equipment.
• Coordinate equipment maintenance, quality assurance testing and replacement planning.
• Contribute to equipment procurement and service development projects.
• Support budget management and ensure efficient use of resources.

Service Development and Quality Improvement

• Work with the Imaging General Manager to develop and improve imaging services.
• Lead and support service redesign, innovation and implementation of best practice.
• Develop and review protocols, policies and standard operating procedures.
• Contribute to Trust-wide strategic planning for radiology services.

Governance, Safety and Compliance

• Ensure compliance with Trust policies, Health and Safety legislation, IR(ME)R, IRR17 and radiation protection requirements.
• Investigate incidents, complaints and risks within the service area.
• Lead quality assurance, audit and clinical governance activities.
