Substantive Consultant – Critical Care and Anaesthesia

University College London Hospitals is seeking to appoint a Substantive Consultant in Critical Care (8PA) and Anaesthesia (2PA). The successful candidate will need to demonstrate commitment to high quality patient care, innovative service models, delivery of performance targets, excellence in education/training and a commitment to make a tangible contribution to our audit/quality improvement programme in their supporting professional activity time. We expect a dedicated interest in improving staff experience and recruitment, supervision and training of our resident doctors.  Desirable characteristics for the Critical Care role would include FUSIC mentorship, ability to assist education and governance of our ECHO and point of care ultrasound services, a dedicated interest in improving staff experience and recruitment, supervision and training of our resident doctors. This role will provide an opportunity to further develop collaborative working between theatres and the CCU.

Main duties of the job

You will provide a consultant-led, patient-centred, clinical service for the critical care department. This includes a twice-daily review of all patients during the working week & daily review at weekends. These duties also cover emergency duties, including emergency work arising from on-call duties, relevant clinical diagnostic work, other patient treatment, attending relevant meetings about direct patient care & administration directly related to the above. The anaesthetic commitment is likely to include both peri-operative care for high-risk patients undergoing complex surgery & high-volume low complexity work. There will be no on call commitment for anaesthesia.

The academic & research activities of the Division are channelled through a number of academic centres in UCL. The critical care consultants contribute actively to the educational & research components of the Bloomsbury Institute for Intensive Care Medicine, the Centre for Perioperative Medicine & have strong collaborative links with UCL Healthcare Engineering Institute of Health Informatics & the Department for Targeted Intervention. UCLH/UCL is a well-established Biomedical Research Centre & the research outputs from Critical Care & Peri-operative Medicine are ranked top within the UK. Recently, we have become a new NIHR Patient Safety Research Collaborative bringing together digital & qualitative researchers to improve our understanding of safety in the high-risk surgery & critical care space.
