Bristol Foundation trust (BFT)is a tertiary referral centre for urology, we see patients from across the Southwest with urological concerns including penile cancers, mesh complications and calculi. The main urology site is Southmead Hospital, but we also have a unit in Weston Super Mare. This role offers the opportunity to work within a large multidisciplinary team providing specialist urological care to patients attending outpatient clinics, diagnostic services and day-case procedures

Following a structured period of training and competency development, the successful candidate will support and facilitate specialist diagnostic and treatment clinics.

Working closely with consultants, specialist nurses, advanced practitioners, radiographers, researchers and wider multidisciplinary colleagues, the post holder will contribute to the assessment, treatment, education and ongoing support of patients with a wide range of urological conditions for benign and malignant urological diseases, ensuring care is delivered safely, effectively and with compassion.

Participate in service improvement initiatives, support the education and development of students and colleagues.

Working hours are predominantly Monday to Friday, with occasional weekend commitments, offering an excellent opportunity to develop specialist nursing skills within a dynamic and supportive outpatient environment.

Main duties of the job

Provide high quality evidence based patient centered nursing care.

Prepare, support and discharge patients undergoing investigations, treatments and follow up care for a wide range of urological conditions.

Undertake nurse led clinics.

Monitor patients before, during and after procedures, recognise complications and escalate concerns appropriately. Coordinate clinic investigation, treatment and follow up appointments to ensure patient flow.

Participate in service improvement initiatives, support the education and development of students and colleagues, and contribute to the achievement of departmental, Trust and national quality standards. They will act as a professional role model, working autonomously within their scope of practice while recognising when to seek support and escalate concerns appropriately.

Advance communication skills to carry out telephone clinics, provide health education promote self care, teach new skills support patients and give and support patients receiving bad news.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Deliver high quality evidence-based patient centered care.

Assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care and treatment plans.

Prepare, support and participate, facilitate urology clinics: flexible cystoscopy (surveillance, stent removal, Tula laser, Botox), prostate biopsy, Lithotripsy, Bladder installations, catheter changes(urethral, suprapubic, ileal conduit and perineal urostomy), Trial without catheter clinics, intermittent self catheterisation, venipuncture, cannulation, complex wounds, nephrostomy dressing change, removal and urinary flow studies.

Perform specialist skills: catheter changes, administer chemotherapy and immunotherapy teach intermittent catheterisation and flushing. Carry out independent nurse led clinics after a period of training and you are competent.

Telephone assessment, triage, follow up support and signposting.

Coordinate outpatient clinic, lead the team and deputise for band 6 and 7 if required. Work collaboratively with consultants and specialist teams in the multi disciplinary team.

Revalidate as required by the NMC and ensure you maintain a valid registration to allow you to practice. Continued professional development, practice within the parameters of NMC code of conduct, local policy and procedures.

Participate in service development, quality improvement and pathway development.

Support teach and supervise students and new learners.
