Job overview

The post holder will take responsibility for assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care programmes throughout the RDCEC paediatric nursing service and will be able to reflect on their working practices to develop team cohesion and patient care.

The post holder will be using their skills and experience in the paediatric ophthalmic day surgery ward, paediatric ophthalmic out-patient clinics and paediatric ophthalmic A&E.

The post holder will also act as a resource for child protection advice in the absence of senior colleagues and will show evidence of continuing practice development.

The post holder will be a supportive team member with an understanding of child development and what impact this can have on their response to their hospital pathway. The post holder will also be aware of the different needs of children and their families and will work with them to deliver family-centred care,

Main duties of the job

he role of the band 5 staff nurse- paediatric service is to work in the ward, out patient clinics, paediatric Accident & Emergency department.

The post holder will work multi-professionally with key members of the paediatric team adapting the concept of family centred care.

Working according to the NMC Code of Professional Conduct, the post holder will:

• Maintaining accountability for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluation programmes of care within the framework of paediatric nursing
• Assist with both direct and indirect care for children, young people and their families/carers
• Assist with advice and support to colleagues, patients and their families/carers

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Assist with advice and support to children and their families, and to act as an advocate for children and families in matters regarding their treatment options and choices within the ward, Accident and Emergency department, out patient and satellite setting

Liaise with other groups of staff in the care of the children, young people and their families

Provide point of contact for children, young people and their families and other health professionals during working hours.

Work alongside paediatric nursing staff within protocols to reflect the use of integrated care pathways and paediatric nursing

Liaise with colleagues to facilitate the provision of holistic care to the children, young people and families, both within the hospital and community

Participate in Safeguarding children and Young People within the Trust and ensure that the Trust Safeguarding Policy is adhered to. In the absence of the named professionals provide advice and support for Trust staff when required.

Be aware of nursing and medical research within the paediatric ophthalmic service

Communicate any changes to the patient's general practitioner, health visitor and district nursing services if indicated, working with the paediatric nursing staff

Be appraised annually and contribute to individual Personal Development Plan (PDP).

Education & Training

To develop own teaching skills within the learning environment in the clinical setting.

To develop own teaching skills and participate in staff programmes.

Contribute to patient education materials working with the paediatric nursing staff and members of the multi-professional team

Attend Trust-based orientation/education and training programmes and attend mandatory training sessions and annual updates

To help maintain a suitable learning environment for staff and act as a facilitator in the supervision and teaching of junior colleagues and students

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
