The role:

This post supports the safe running of the Scotland wide human milk bank service. This service provides safe screened donor human milk across Scotland’s Neonatal Units, postnatal wards and to community families. The post holder is accountable to the Milk Bank Coordinator and supports the day to day delivery of the service. The post holder will manage and delegate workload, supervise safe pasteurisation of donor human milk, ordering and recording tests and test results. The post holder will also support the recruitment and management of donors.

Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:

  • This is a permanent part-time post of 15 hours per week.
  • This post is based at the Donor Milk Bank, Maternity Unit, QEUH G51 4TF
  • Please note the salary is Pro Rata for part time hours.
  • The shift pattern is Monday to Friday.

Key responsibilities:

(1) Communication

The Nurse will apply the principles of good communication, which justify the trust and confidence of the public, and will establish and maintain effective relationships with Donors, nursing colleagues and members of the multidisciplinary team.

  • Practice in accordance with NMC Code of Professional conduct, Guidelines, and Division policies. ·
  • Demonstrate effective verbal and written communication with Donors and staff, demonstrating a caring and understanding approach at all times.
  • Ensure Donor confidentiality is respected at all times.
  • Participate in clinical communication/education of Donors and colleagues.
  • Participate in multi-professional decision-making concerning Donors.
  • Ensure that all nursing documentation is accurate and legible.
  • Demonstrate the ability to interpret and report changes in service needs.

(2) Quality Assured Patient Care

The nurse will deliver a quality assured systematic approach to patient care.

  • Demonstrate knowledge, understanding and clinical competence,
  • Delegate staff with due regard to the individuals’ capabilities, utilising available skill mix appropriately.
  • Is able to self-assess own and others’ performance, recognising abilities and limitations.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the individual Donor eligibility to donate
  • Demonstrate the ability to ensure that assessment of Donor eligibility is individualized to encompass the cultural and spiritual needs.
  • Respect and maintain the confidentiality of Donors their families and colleagues.
  • Participate in the recruitment, consenting, screening and training all new donor mothers in safe collection and storage of donor milk
  • Participate in research and audit projects to ensure practice is evidence-based.
  • Demonstrate an awareness of legal and professional responsibilities within nursing practice.

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:

  • Professional Registration through NMC with qualification of Registered Nurse (Adult or Child Branch)
  • Clinical experience in Neonatal/Paediatric/Midwifery specialty
  • Good Communication Skills
  • Flexible to suit the demands of the service
  • Positive professional manner and attitude
  • Ability to work within a Multi-disciplinary Team Setting
