Saint Francis Hospice is seeking to recruit a doctor with a special interest in palliative medicine for a full time, fixed term (4 months) Specialty Doctor/Clinical Fellow post (grade and pay dependent on experience). The post runs from 07.10.2026. The post fills a fallow post due to a Registrar gap. The contract will be an NHS contract, held by BHRUT (the local hospital trust) but will be fully seconded to the hospice.
This post is ideal for a doctor with an interest in palliative care, seeking to gain hospice experience towards application to a Specialist Palliative Care training rotation or seeking to consolidate/expand their palliative care knowledge and skills.
Applicants must have completed their foundation years’ training, with, ideally (but not exclusively) an additional 2 years + experience in relevant clinical practice (the additional 2 years + enabling eligibility for Specialty Doctor status).
Our hospice is 4 miles from Romford station, in beautiful countryside on the London-Essex border. We have 18 specialist palliative care beds and a busy community service, which includes a 24/7 helpline, Community CNS, medical and wide MDT visiting services.
We see and support people with complex problems related to both advanced malignant and non-malignant conditions, frequently with multi morbidity.
Main duties of the job
We serve the population of Outer East London (Redbridge, Barking & Dagenham, Havering), near West Essex and Brentwood. Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust is our local hospital Trust.
We are a regional education centre, experienced in supporting doctors and others in training.
The post holder will join a medical team of 2.4WTE Consultants, 1.6WTE Specialty Doctors and 2.4WTE GP trainees. The post holder will provide middle grade support to the hospice ward, with opportunity for community visiting dependant on experience. Development and career progression will be supported in line with the applicant’s level of training/personal development goals.
There is an on-call requirement, which involves weekend daytime ward rounds and admissions, with non-resident low intensity night cover. Postholders must be able to attend the hospice within 1 hour during non-resident on call periods.

Qualifications
Essential
- Recognised basic medical degree and full GMC registration with license to practise
- Completion of UK Foundation Training OR evidence of competency equivalent to UK foundation training and at least 2 yrs full-time equivalent post foundation years’ experience in relevant areas (e.g. GP/Medicine/Oncology/Neuro/Care of Elderly/A&E)
- Commitment to palliative care through recent (within 1 year) relevant CPD and relevant quality improvement project or audit and the mission/core values of Saint Francis Hospice
Desirable
- MRCP / MRCGP / FRCP or equivalent qualification (at point of starting post)
- Experience of working in specialist palliative care
- Experience of research relevant to specialist palliative or end of life care
