Secure Services are seeking a specialty doctor in psychiatry to join our large medical team. Together we provide forensic psychiatric care for patients from across the South West. Our service comprises 3 low secure wards, 7 medium secure wards and three community teams. We work in multi-disciplinary teams comprising occupational therapists, social workers, psychologists, arts therapists and nurses. Our service is well supported by a primary care team including practice nurses, GPs, podiatry, physiotherapy, dentistry and dietetics. The service and wider organisation offers lots of opportunities for continued professional development and career progression. The post-holder will have protected SPA time and be supported to take on leadership, audit, quality improvement or teaching projects.
Main duties of the job
As the post holder , duties would include;
- To provide, under supervision, day-to-day medical care for a caseload of inpatients within a secure service. This will include contributions towards the assessment and treatment of mental disorder and the assessment and management of risk.
- To clerk new admissions and complete a thorough history and examination, including physical examination and risk assessment to be documented in patient’s notes.
- To contribute to assessment by regularly review patients’ mental health and monitor response to treatment.
- To work alongside primary care colleagues to oversee and coordinate the physical health care of patients. This might include initial assessment/triage, referral and implementation of treatment plans.
- To attend and contribute to MDT meetings including ward round, reflective practice and CPAs.
- To make regular records in the patient’s notes and, where appropriate, to update the treatment plan. To prepare reports including for CPA meetings and discharge summaries.

Eligibilty
Essential
- Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practice, or eligible for full registration with the GMC at the time of confirmaiton of appointment
- Completed at least four years’ full-time postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part-time or flexible basis) at least two of which will be in a specialty training programme in Psychiatry or as a fixed term specialty trainee in Psychiatry; or shall have equivalent experience and competencies.
Desirable
- Experience of assessing and treating patients in custodial/prison/Forensic settings.
Qualifications
Essential
- Basic Medical Qualification (MBBS or equivalent)
Desirable
- Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

Essential
- Commitment to teaching other members of the multi-disciplinary team
Desirable
- PGCME or equivalent/aspiration to attain a postgraduate teaching qualification
Research and Audit

- Ability to critically appraise published research.

- Experience in involvement in a research project and publication.
