Job overview

Clinical duties will include all those duties normally expected of a Tier 4 Emergency clinician as outlined by RCEM. This will include rostered shifts acting in the role of the Emergency Physician in Charge (EPiC) and clinical shifts where the postholder will see a case load in line with college guidance across the full scope of emergency medicine practice.

Main duties of the job

  • To work independently as a Teir 4 emergency clinician and at time acting as Emergency Physician in Charge (EPiC) with remote supervision from a consultant who may be off site.
  • Deliver patient care across the full range of Emergency Medicine presentations, including minor injuries, major trauma, acute medical, and surgical emergencies in adult and paediatric patients.
  • Conduct initial assessments, investigations, and treatment plans in line with clinical guidelines.
  • Lead resuscitation efforts and manage critically ill or injured patients.
  • Provide senior clinical decision-making and support to junior doctors, nurses, and allied healthcare professionals.
  • Ensure timely referral to appropriate specialties for admission or follow-up care.
  • Participate in handover processes, board rounds and maintain accurate and detailed medical records.
  • Contribute to the departmental response during major incidents and mass casualty events.
  • Supervise and support junior medical staff, providing clinical guidance and feedback.
  • Act as a role model and promote a culture of clinical excellence, professionalism, and teamwork in addition to upholding the trust values.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of emergency medicine and undertake continuous professional development (CPD) as per RCEM requirements.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will be expected at times to lead the department and undertake clinical duties where there is remote supervision from a consultant who may be offsite ie overnight. Clinical shifts will also include the shop floor supervision and teaching of more junior resident doctors. In addition, the appointee will be expected to take part in departmental formal teaching and on-going audit programmes as well as other education and clinical governance activities.

Clinical Experience

Essential

  • Evidence of point of care ultrasound competence at RCEM core curriculum level
  • Able to act as a senior decision maker (Teir 4 clinician) across UK adult and paediatric emergency medicine practice

Education/Qualifications

Essential

  • Shall have full registration and a Licence to Practice with the General Medical Council
  • Shall have completed at least four years’ full-time postgraduate experience in emergency medicine (or equivalent gained on a part-time or flexible basis)
  • ALS/ACLS, APLS/EPALS, ATLS/ETC trained (evidence of successful completion of courses but not essential for all to be in date)

Desirable

  • MRCEM or other equivalent post graduate qualification.

Experience in Training, Audit and Research

Essential

  • Evidence of personal involvement in quality improvement or audit activities
  • Evidence of teaching experience
