This is a full-time post for a Specialty Doctor with significant experience in General and Upper GI Surgery. An exciting opportunity exists for enthusiastic and ambitious individuals to join and support the surgical team. The successful applicant will be expected to work within the Upper GI subspecialty team. The Surgical Department maintains a busy full shift emergency and general surgical commitment.
It is expected that this post will provide you with good experience in looking after acute and elective general surgical adult patients.
During the Consultants’ on-call week, there will be daily Post-Take Ward Rounds and no routine clinical activities.
Almost half of the surgical admissions to the hospital are emergencies. This will provide the post holder with ample experience in the management of the acute abdomen, head injury, and common general surgical emergencies. There is excellent back up for managing critically ill patients from consultant anaesthetists and intensivists. They provide help with resuscitation and transfer of patients with major head injuries to neurosurgical units.
It is expected that you will become familiar with the pre/peri- and post-operative management of patients in the general surgical specialties and will acquire the practical skills appropriate to your level of training to support the general surgery department.
Main duties of the job
- Supporting outpatient and inpatient care of patients with general surgical problems referred by General Practitioners and hospital colleagues.
- Supporting the consultant surgeon in providing, enhancing and developing specialist care in the area of Upper GI Surgery
- Management of emergency admissions when on-call supporting on call FY1 and consulting with consultant on call as appropriate.
- Supervising junior doctors and non-consultant medical staff.
- Teaching junior doctors, medical students and non-medical staff as appropriate and in line with the guidance by the Postgraduate Dean and Clinical Tutor and FY1 Foundation year programme Director.
- Conducting patient management in line with the guidelines agreed by the surgical consultants and the Trust.
- Undertaking audit of his/her work and contributing to appropriate national audits.
- Participating in continuing professional development and in the Trust’s appraisal and assessment processes, which include a formal annual appraisal.
- Participating in the Trust’s Clinical Governance activities.

Experience and Knowledge
Essential
- Thorough & broad training in General Surgery including emergency surgery for a minimum of 5 years at Registrar level.
- Specific training in Upper GI / laparoscopic / general surgery
- Experience in Gastroscopy
- Teaching at post- and undergraduate levels
Education and Qualifications
Essential
- MBBS (or equivalent)
- ATLS course
- Full GMC Registration
Desirable
- FRCS Intercollegiate or equivalent
- CCT and/or inclusion on the Specialist Register of GMC or within six months of Appointments Advisory Committee
- ALS Certificate
