Job overview

The department is excited to recruit a Specialty Dentist to be part of our Oral Surgery Team. The Department works in close collaboration with the Oral Medicine, Orthodontic, Paediatric Dentistry, Restorative Dentistry and Special Care services. We work with the University of Birmingham School of Dentistry as one team and all successful candidates will be expected to be involved in clinical undergraduate as well as post graduate teaching including DCT, StR, School of Hygiene and Therapy and Dental Nurse training. We are also looking to expand our dental sedation training courses. We offer treatment under local anaesthetic, sedation and general anaesthetic.

We are able to offer successful candidates flexible working over a 3-session day in line with service needs.

Main duties of the job

The Oral Surgery Department undertakes a wide range of outpatient treatment and supports the clinical activity in the Urgent Care Service. There is a strong emphasis on the delivery of treatment under sedation. We also run GA services, supported by anaesthetic colleagues from the Birmingham Children’s Hospital and University Hospital Birmingham. The Oral Surgery department provides a comprehensive outpatient service covering a full range of dento-alveolar procedures.

The Urgent Care Service provides a dental casualty service during the opening hours of the Dental Hospital, seeing emergency patients directed from the NHS 111 system.

Clinical undergraduate dental students attend for both practical and theoretical instruction throughout the Department on a regular basis. The post holder will be expected to contribute to this programme as directed by the Head of Service.

An approved training programme for specialist training to membership level is delivered within the department. There is also an active teaching and training programme for Dental Core Trainees.
