Job overview

The Department of Oral Medicine is seeking a fixed term 12 months Specialty Dentist in Oral Medicine to join a dynamic, enthusiastic and forward-thinking team. The department is currently involved in many exciting initiatives and is looking for an individual with the appropriate skills to complement our team and to help keep our service at the forefront of clinical and academic excellence.

The Department offers a wide range of services to patients with oral mucosal conditions, oral manifestations of systemic diseases and chronic orofacial pain. The post-holder will undertake general outpatient sessions along with supporting the well-established multi-disciplinary clinics.

This is an excellent opportunity to join a first-class team in an active and progressive central London teaching hospital environment. This includes asking staff to work more flexibly so that we can offer services to patients in the evenings and at weekends to ensure we continue to provide patient-centred care. This post will include provision for flexible working in the future if required in accordance with the provisions of the new Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust Consultant contract

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will be accountable to Poonam Kalsi, Clinical Director of the Dental Directorate.

Main Place of Employment The post will be based in the Tower Wing of Guy’s Hospital. However, it is a requirement of your employment that you be prepared to work at any additional or different location owned or served by the Trust, either on an on-going or temporary basis according to the demands of the service.

Job Summary The post holders will be expected to:

  • Participate in clinical and other service activities with the objective of ensuring a high standard of patient care including a significant contribution to gathering data to demonstrate outcomes for our patients at Trust, local and national levels
  • Contribute to the clinical supervision of undergraduates and assist in the delivery of courses throughout the BDS programme
  • Participate in training and education of postgraduate students
  • Contribute to the development and management of quality improvement projects and clinical audit within the department
  • Ensure that referral to treatment times for patients comply with the requirements of the Department of Health
  • Contribute to departmental clinical research

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Job Plan

The job plan is anticipated to contain up to 10 Programmed Activities (PAs) per week to be carried out on Guy’s & St Thomas’ sites and currently does not include on-call commitments. This is a sample programme and the post holder will be expected to discuss and agree a detailed job plan, including personal and professional objectives with the Clinical Director within 3 months of the start date.

The job plan will be negotiated with the Clinical Lead. The job plan, based on a 10 PAs post is anticipated to be:
