Here is an exciting opportunity for you to join us as a Specialty Doctor -Vascular Services MSE  covering all three sites.

You are required to complete emergency on-call cover rota, which covers on call 24 hours a day seven days a week.

You will join a dedicated team of trainees and permanent staff to provide these services and will be expected to supervise the activities of the on call FY1 and FY2 in Vascular Surgery and to work closely with nurse practitioners.

Your responsibilities will include the rapid assessment of all emergency admissions and GP referrals, supporting trauma calls as required and performing emergency operations under consultant supervision. All activities of the appointment will be supervised by the on-call consultant who is free of clinical commitments when on call. A one-hour handover is timetabled between on call shifts and the appointee will be expected to receive or provide written handover using the electronic discharge system to the new admitting team at the beginning and end of each shift during the 1 hour timetabled handover (8:00 – 9:00 and 19:00 – 20:00) and may be expected to attend the post-take ward round to handover sick patients.

You will be expected to attend the hospital at night handover meeting to liaise with the medical on call teams. You undertakes to deputise from time to time for absent colleagues.

Main duties of the job

  • To collaborate with other health care professional to provide timely care for all patients in the hospital.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of clinical protocols.
  • Ensure that standards are maintained and developed through clinical audit, evidence-based research and appraisal. To attend monthly governance, mortality and morbidity meetings, audit meetings and specialty quarterly review meetings.
  • Be familiar with the College curricula for resident doctor training and be trained appropriately to contribute to their training requirements, including tutorials, on- the-job teaching, mentoring, appraisal and workplace-based assessment.
  • Maintain personal professional development in accordance with the requirements of the Royal Colleges and the General Medical Council.
  • Ensure that new techniques (outside ethically approved research projects) are only introduced after appropriate training, with approval of the relevant clinical directorates and with arrangements for evaluation and an audit trail.
  • Agree an annual job plan with the Clinical Lead and participate in annual appraisal using the Trust system.
  • Work in partnership with colleagues across the hospital.
  • Provide cover for medical colleagues’ periods of leave in accordance with arrangements agreed within the Department.
  • Provide a safe level of care for all patients admitted under the surgical department.

Organisational Duties:

  • All Staff in the Department are managerially accountable to the Clinical Lead who has overall responsibility for Surgical Services.
  • The post holder will work within the Trust’s framework for Corporate Governance including standing orders, standing financial instructions and financial procedures.
  • As part of the Divisional Team, assist in the cost-effective utilisation of resources, including pay and non-pay items such as equipment and drugs, within budgets.
  • Continuing responsibility for the care of patients in your charge in liaison with consultant colleagues and for the proper functioning of the department in line with the Operation Policy and Strategic Plan.
  • All clinical staff are individually accountable and responsible for their own clinical competence and should limit their actions to those for which they are deemed competent. Clinical staff are also required to comply with the requirements of their professional organisations regarding supervision.
  • All qualified staff have a responsibility to supervise unqualified/more resident staff and students on a day-to-day basis to ensure that patients receive appropriate care and that any untoward action is addressed.

  • Teaching of primary care colleagues and resident medical staff through mixture of case-based review and formal teaching activity

Essential

  • 12m Vascular services expereince
  • 12m UK NHS expereince

Desirable

  • 1 years General Surgery expereince
  • 3 years UK NHS Experience

Qualifications

Essential

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • Completed 4 years full time post graduate training (or equivalent if part time) at least 2 of which shall be in a specialty training programme in the specialty or shall have equivalent experience and competencies.
