An opportunity has arisen to join our oncology department as a Specialty Doctor in Medical Oncology, contributing to the lung and urological cancer services and to the acute oncology service (AOS) at the Royal Free and Barnet Hospitals.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will work alongside consultant clinical and medical oncology colleagues, with clinical supervision from the responsible consultants and autonomy appropriate to their experience. We welcome experienced doctors who are not in a formal training programme and who wish to develop a career in the specialty and specialist (SAS) grades. The department already includes Specialty Doctors within its oncology workforce.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Applicants should have wide experience in oncology, experience relevant to lung and/or urological cancers, and a commitment to multidisciplinary working. The post is offered on the 2021 terms and conditions of service for specialty doctors (England).

Knowledge
Essential
- Knowledge of the clinical governance framework of the NHS (including research governance) and understanding of current NHS organisation and management
- The highest ethical and professional standards in clinical practice, education and audit
- Awareness and understanding of health, safety and security issues for self and others
Desirable
- Knowledge and understanding of the principles of resource and budgetary management within the NHS
Qualifications
Essential
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
- Full registration with the GMC and a licence to practise
- A minimum of four years’ postgraduate training or experience (or equivalent gained on a part-time or flexible basis), of which at least two years are in oncology (clinical or medical oncology)
- Evidence of achievement of the competences expected on completion of core and relevant specialty training, or equivalent experience in the field
- Membership of a medical defence organisation
Desirable
- FRCR, MRCP or equivalent postgraduate qualification
- A higher or postgraduate degree (for example MSc, MD or PhD), held or being worked towards

Experience & Clinical Skills
Essential
- Wide experience in oncology
- Experience in the management of lung and/or urological cancers
- Experience of delivering medical oncology treatment relevant to the tumour sites of the post
- Experience of acute oncology
- Proven clinical ability appropriate to the grade
- Experience of and commitment to multidisciplinary working
- Clinical audit experience
- Experience of and interest in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
Desirable
- Experience of, or involvement in, clinical trials
