We are looking for two enthusiastic and conscientious Locum Speciality Dentists to join our professional and supportive team in Oral Surgery at the Birmingham Dental Hospital. These posts are 12-month locum contracts to cover maternity leave.
The successful candidates will work under the direction of the Consultants in Oral Surgery and will undertake all aspects of oral surgery dental care as well as providing an emergency dental service which is also based at the hospital. Oral Surgery is a large team comprising of Consultants, Specialist Dentists, Speciality Dentists, Core Trainees and Dental Registrars. The team also includes dedicated dental nurses and administrative support.
The post holders are expected to be professional, caring and have excellent clinical skills. They should deliver care that is centred on the patient and carer and in line with latest guidance. They will have outstanding communication skills and the ability to present ideas to both patients and the team.
There is an entitlement to continuing professional education, subject to the Terms and Conditions of Service. Study Leave and support is granted at the discretion of the Clinical Director acting on the advice on the Consultant responsible for the post.
There is an extensive programme of postgraduate courses organised, both within the Dental Hospital and through the region, by the West Midlands Postgraduate Dental Committee. In addition, monthly teaching and training afternoons are held within the Dental Hospital building.
Advice on continuing postgraduate education and career progression through the specialty is available to all.
As a teaching unit, the Birmingham Dental Hospital and School of Dentistry undertake a wide range of research activities for which excellent facilities are available. The duties of this post are primarily of a service nature and as such, no specific requirement to pursue research is included.
Management of Leadership responsibilities
To undertake other duties commensurate with this grade of post in agreement with the Head of Service for Oral Surgery.
To minimise the Trust’s environmental impact wherever possible, including recycling, switching off lights, computers, monitors and equipment when not in use. Helping to reduce paper waste by minimising printing/copying and reducing water usage, reporting faults and heating/cooling concerns promptly and minimising travel. Where the role includes the ordering and use of supplies or equipment the post holder will consider the environmental impact of purchases.
Responsible for ensuring identified training and development is undertaken appropriate to the postholder’s role.
Key Relationships
To establish effective working relation with the following: Divisional Medical Directors, lead clinicians Executive Directors, senior managers, Medical and Dental HR Business Partner, NHSE&I, Health Education West Midlands, local Universities.
Terms and Conditions of Service
The post is subject to the Terms and Conditions of Service for Speciality Doctors – England 2021 and associated schedules and relevant organisational employment policies.
Salary is on a scale, with commencing point according to previous experience.
The post will be held on a non-resident basis and there is no on call requirement.
There is only limited availability of on-site staff parking. Railway stations and bus stops connecting to the city centre are within walking distance.

Professional Registration
The appointee should be a Medical/Dental Practitioner registered with the GDC and with a licence to practice. He/she is encouraged to be a member of an appropriate medical/dental Defence Organisation.
