JOB SUMMARY
The post is required to provide specialist Speech and Language Therapy input to the multidisciplinary Community Stroke Team. The post-holder will provide assessment, diagnosis and treatment for adults who present with communication difficulties and/or dysphagia, arising from a stroke living within the community catchment areas of South Eastern Trust.
KEY DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES
The post holder is required to be an experienced specialist Speech & Language Therapist and will provide assessment, diagnosis and treatment for adult clients presenting with communication difficulties and/or dysphagia arising from a Stroke.
The post holder will work within the Community Stroke Team and will work with the senior Speech & Language Therapists/Lead Professional, and other operational managers, as required, with regard to management of the services within the Department/Team.
The post holder will have access to senior Speech & Language Therapists for expert clinical advice and support (this may not be on site support).
The post holder will have direct access to the Speech & Language Therapy Lead Professional/Community Stroke Team Manager in relation to professional and/or management issues.
Clinical/Professional/Specific Managerial Responsibilities
To provide specialist assessment, diagnosis and treatment for a full range of speech, language and communication disorders and dysphagia for adult clients, including those with complex needs.
To demonstrate skills in negotiation and motivation, in order to assist clients and/or carers to be involved in the individual care plan and in encouraging engagement in the therapeutic process particularly where communication problems exist.
To provide specialist Speech & Language Therapy advice to, and liaise with, multidisciplinary groups/clinics/teams, to care givers and relatives, voluntary agencies and to Speech & Language Therapy colleagues and will participate in case conferences as required.
To attend and/or assist in videofluoroscopy assessment of dysphagia when appropriate, and to input into FEES for appropriate clients (depending on training).
To provide a service to other multidisciplinary teams as required.
To be accountable for his/her, own professional actions, recognise professional boundaries and seek advice as appropriate.
To expand upon professional knowledge/competence and to attend relevant courses and conferences in order to develop and maintain the standard of the service.
To liaise with senior Speech & Language Therapists for expert advice on issues relating to caseload.
To carry out home visits and domiciliary work as required and deemed necessary in accordance with departmental and Trust policies.
To maintain specialised equipment, including IT and Communication Aids, within the specialist area and to offer advice on replacement as this arises.
To assist in giving advice, support, supervision and guidance to junior Speech & Language Therapists and/or SLT Assistants/Rehabilitation Assistants and to provide general advice to other Speech & Language Therapists, relating to clients on the specialist caseload/clinical specialty/facility as appropriate.
To be responsible for the supervision and training of specific Speech & Language Therapy students.
To undertake administrative duties as they pertain to the clinical area, this will include the maintenance of clinical records, specialist reports and statistics
To maintain a record of CPD activity to meet the requirements of both RCSLT and HCPC.
Generic managerial responsibilities both within an operational and strategic context.
To be responsible for the planning and management of the clinical caseload and may have responsibility for one or more clinical settings.
To monitor service/outcomes of treatment in conjunction with senior Speech and Language Therapists and all other operational managers where appropriate, to participate in the overall evaluation and development of the service within evidence-based practice and to attend any relevant working groups as delegated by the senior Speech and Language Therapists and the Lead Professional for Speech & Language Therapy.
To participate in the supervision process, attend and participate in staff/team meetings as required and in an annual Staff appraisal process (PDCR).
To participate, with the senior Speech & Language Therapists and all other operational managers where appropriate, in identifying and responding to, and taking delegated responsibility for, delivery of specialist training to colleagues/carers, professional and other agencies, in relation to the specialist client group.
To deal with informal complaints related to his/her own caseload/specialty, re-directing to senior Speech & Language Therapists/Lead Professional for Speech and Language Therapy/operational manager as appropriate.
To assist in selection/recruitment and induction processes as appropriate.
To assist senior Speech & Language Therapists and all other operational managers where appropriate, in identification of, and take delegated responsibility for, the development and implementation of, policies, standards setting, audits and evaluation of service developments within the specialist clinical area.
To be aware of, and contribute to, the interpretation (including Health & Safety) of current legislation, risk management issues, Trust policies and departmental/professional guidelines and adhere to those relevant to the post.
