Are you a current post-registration hospital pharmacist or clinical pharmacist working in another area of practice? Are you looking for experience in a specialist clinical area to develop your skills? If so Bristol NHS Foundation Trust has a 12 month secondment to join our existing pool of Specialist Rotational Pharmacists, who rotate through:

  • Cardiac Services in the Bristol Heart Institute (70%) [BHI], Intensive Care (20%) and the Outpatient Anticoagulation Dosing Service (10%) [BRI]
  • Woman's and Children's Clinical Services [BRHC]
  • Ophthalmology in the Bristol Eye Hospital [BEH]
  • Antimicrobial Stewardship (50%) Medicines Safety (50%) [BRI]

We are looking for motivated new team members to join our specialist clinical rotational pharmacists. Our ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate post-registration experience in clinical practice with development against the RPS Foundation Pharmacy Framework, will be GPhC registered and be able to demonstrate their experience in clinical practice through application and interview showcasing their readiness to move into a more specialist role.

Main duties of the job

The Specialist Clinical Pharmacist Development Pathway provides clinical rotations, supervision and projects to equip pharmacists to progress in line with the RPS Advanced Pharmacist Curriculum to progress to the next level in their career.

Our program includes:

  • 8-month rotations in Bristol city centre hospitals through ophthalmology, cardiac services including anticoagulation and critical care, paediatrics, antimicrobial stewardship, and medicines safety
  • A commitment to incorporate additional exciting opportunities into each rotation as they arise
  • Developmental support against the RPS Advanced Pharmacist Curriculum through clinical diploma, independent prescribing and ePortfolio as appropriate for the learner
  • A requirement to work mainly across the Bristol site, and to participate in the departmental late, weekend, bank-holiday and non-residential on-call service rotas. Weekend shifts will be managed with a commensurate weekday off-duty day.

Skills and Abilities

Essential

  • Ability to operate multiple clinical digital systems
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Problem identification and solving.
  • Prioritisation and task management
  • Able to critically analyse prescriptions for clinical appropriateness, and to use clinical judgement to challenge and influence prescribing
  • Can organise own and others work to meet agreed deadlines and targets
  • Ability to make safe and clinically relevant decisions in high pressure environments
  • Ability to manage a small team of foundation pharmacists and pharmacy technicians on a daily basis
  • Ability to critically analyse different approaches to problem solving to inform project work (including audit and research)

Knowledge and Experience

Essential

  • Evidence of UK clinical hospital pharmacy experience
  • Experience of audit, quality improvement and/or project work
  • Knowledge of common conditions encountered in area of practice, and of safe and appropriate drug treatments
  • Experience of one-to-one and/or small group teaching
  • Knowledge of the legal framework for the dispensing, prescribing and administering or medicines
  • Mentoring, support and supervision

Qualifications and Training

Essential

  • Masters degree in Pharmacy.
  • Registration with General Pharmaceutical Council.
  • Postgraduate certificate (or equivalent) in Clinical Pharmacy.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development.

Desirable

  • Membership of a relevant professional Pharmacy group or body
  • Postgraduate Diploma, Master's degree or equivalent in Clinical Pharmacy
  • Independent Prescriber
