The Pharmacy Department within The Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has undergone significant expansion and transformation over the past 18 months and this development continues with the creation of two new posts designed to lead and deliver the student placements at the Royal Victoria Infirmary for the year 3 undergraduate students from Newcastle University School of Pharmacy.
We are looking for an enthusiastic and ambitious pharmacist with experience of working in a hospital pharmacy to join our clinical education and training team. The posts will be managed by our new lead Pharmacist for Education and Training. The Trust has hosted undergraduate placements of pharmacy students since the School of Pharmacy opened at Newcastle University. The placements have been set up and run by our fantastic clinical technician team, who will continue to run the year 1 placements.

Main duties of the job
With the integration of independent prescribing into the pharmacy degree; it is necessary to redesign the year 3 placements so that the undergraduate students are exposed to active pharmacist decision making and prescribing in a patient setting and be taught good consultation and counselling skills.
The pharmacy department has a close working relationship with the School of Pharmacy; and the post holder will be encouraged to work closely with the team at the university; assisting with tasks such as OSCE assessments. This would be an ideal role for an individual who is enthusiastic about education and training, with a keen interest in research. The design and implementation of our current placements have been written up and published in educational journals; and we are keen that this legacy is continued. The postholder will be given the opportunity to assist with input into dissertation and MSc projects.
We recognize that ongoing development of the post holders’ clinical skills is important and so the post holders will be aligned to a clinical specialty for their ward based work when not supervising the students.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The post holders will be responsible for
- Work closely with existing education and training team and clinical pharmacy teams
- Organization of placement timetables
- Writing of placement guidance and teaching materials
- Supervision of the students while they are on the wards
- Small group teaching of the students
- To demonstrate to the undergraduates how to translate their undergraduate learning into active prescribing in a clinical setting using their IP qualification
- Actively seeking out teaching opportunities for the students
- Designing and implementation of novel entrustable activities to develop the students’ skill sets
- Working closely with ward staff to ensure that patient experience is enhanced through interactions with the students.
- To lead on clinical audit and QI projects
- To continue to develop their clinical knowledge by working closely embedded within clinical teams
- Overall contribution to the operational workload within the department e.g. dispensary when the placements are not running.
As the purpose of these posts is to develop the undergraduate prescribing skills and decision making; it is desirable for the pharmacists to already have their IP qualification.
Post holders will be given opportunity and encouraged to undertake appropriate qualifications in medical education such as PGCert.
Post holders will not be required to contribute to the on call rota; but, in order to maintain clinical pharmacy skills, will need to contribute to the extended hours service through weekend and late night rotas.
The undergraduate placements take place all day on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and post holders will be required to work these days.
Post holders will need to manage annual leave around term dates and avoid taking annual leave during term time. The placements start in October 2026.
Term Dates (2026–2027)
- Autumn Term: Monday 21 September 2026 – Friday 11 December 2026
- Spring Term: Monday 4 January 2027 – Thursday 25 March 2027
- Summer Term: Monday 19 April 2027 – Friday 4 June 2027
As a department we are supportive of flexible working and would welcome a discussion about this with any potential applicants. We have an embedded culture of 9 day fortnights in many of our clinical roles. The days and term dates of the placements are fixed and any decisions around flexible working would be based around these.
