Job overview

The post holder will be responsible for ensuring the provision of compassionate, safe and high quality care of orthoptic patients in line with Health Care Proficiency Standards (HCPC). The Orthoptist has a fundamental role in service delivery, working autonomously in the diagnosis and management of complex adult and paediatric orthoptic cases.

The Orthoptist will be competent to plan and perform a range of highly complex investigations including assessment of visual impairments, assessment of binocular function, assessment of ocular motility and double vision and to conclude a diagnosis and cause for defect. These include assessments and measurements of squint, eye movements and visual acuity.

The Orthoptist will be competent to devise management plans of the conditions and provide treatment plans. To inform patients / carers of continued home therapies. To review management of the treatments according to clinical need and alter if required following detailed assessments of the patient.

Main duties of the job

  • To provide a high quality Orthoptic service for all patients referred to the hospital service in Stockport and High Peak and work autonomously in the diagnosis and management of complex adult and paediatric cases.
  • To be responsible for ensuring the provision of compassionate, safe and high quality patient care.
  • To work autonomously in the community clinics and schools in Stockport and North Derbyshire. This involves work without supervision in providing a diagnosis, management and treatment of patients referred in both Trusts.
  • To undertake a specialist role within the department
  • Top show leadership skills in line with a Band 6 post
  • To take direct referrals, prioritise and judge requirements for onward referral. May be first point of contact for patients and is totally responsible for patient management.
  • To determine the clinical diagnosis and develop effective treatment plans
  • To work effectively as part of a team
  • To undertake some of the clerical and administrative duties involved in the running of the hospital orthoptic departments at Stepping Hill Hospital and the Cavendish Hospital, and in community clinics and schools.
