Specialist Medicines Information Pharmacy Technician
This is an exciting opportunity to play a central role in delivering a high-quality Medicines Information (MI) service that directly supports patient safety and clinical decision-making across the Trust. You will take ownership of the day-to-day running of the MI unit, responding to enquiries, conducting evidence-based research, and providing trusted advice to clinicians and healthcare teams. Alongside this, you will contribute to key initiatives such as formulary management, medicines safety communications, and service improvements—making a real, visible impact on prescribing practice and patient care.
You’ll also have a strong focus on developing others, making this role ideal for someone passionate about education and mentorship. You will train and support pharmacy technicians, trainee pharmacists, and students, helping them build essential skills in medicines information and clinical practice. From delivering inductions to contributing to ongoing professional development and national networking opportunities, you’ll be at the heart of fostering the next generation of pharmacy professionals.

Main duties of the job
- Provide technical support for the maintenance and development of a safe and efficient Medicines Information Service. This includes enquiry answering, database searching and maintenance / development of systems.
- Provide training and supervision to all technicians, and undergraduate pharmacists assigned to Medicines Information. Assist in the provision of Medicines Information training to pre-registration and other pharmacists, PTPT and other staff in Medicines Information.
- Co-ordinate medicines management related activities including supporting clinical teams with new drug application to facilitate a single system approach across SWL
- Promote the safe, effective and economic use of medicines
- Build and maintain proactive and effective relationships with all stakeholders including ICS colleagues and region wide colleagues.

EXPERIENCE
Essential
- Significant post qualification experience in a hospital pharmacy setting. Demonstrate ability of solving complex medicines information queries. Experience in using specialist and general sources of information to deal with clinical queries. Experience in dealing with formulary related queries. Experience in contacting HCPs outside of the organisation in dealing with medicines related queries. Previous experience of training / supervision of other staff
Desirable
- Experience working in Medicines Information Unit. Have completed non-formulary forms or liaised with the formulary team in dealing with non-formulary requests. Have had experience in creating MEMO. Have had experience in writing meeting agenda and minutes. Primary care experience. Experience managing a ward based or equivalent clinical service. Significant experience of being a clinical ward technician. Experiences of self-medication schemes and patient medication counselling. Experience of conducting / being involved with quality improvement
SKILLS / ABILITIES
Essential
- Demonstrable good leadership, communication (written and oral), organisational, problem solving and management skills. Excellent customer care and near patient care service. Good interpersonal and negotiation skills and proven assertiveness and delegation skills. Excellent IT skills and familiarity with common software packages (e.g. Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc.) and hospital systems e.g. Cerner, JAC. Ability to work under pressure. Self-motivated and ability to motivate others / act as a role model. Personal awareness of limitations. Ability to develop and implement new procedures. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
Essential
- Excellent knowledge of clinical pharmacy. Knowledge of the requirements of national organisations involved in Pharmacy Services. Awareness of specialist and general sources of information to aid in dealing with clinical queries. Experience of audits and key performance indicators. Good IT skills and knowledge of pharmacy computer systems. Awareness of current NHS issues including national and local priorities. Demonstrates a working knowledge risk management.
Desirable
- Development of Trustwide policies. Management skills including leadership, teamwork and appraisals. Demonstrates an awareness of interface issues
EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS
Essential
- NVQ in Pharmacy Services level 3 with BTEC in Pharmaceutical Science as underpinning knowledge or equivalent. National Medicines Management Course or equivalent or evidence of competence. Registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council. Practice Supervisor qualification or equivalent. Evidence of commitment to CPD and maintains an up to date CPD portfolio.
Desirable
- National UK Medicines Information Technician Accreditation qualification. Educational Supervisor qualification or equivalent. National accredited checking qualification
