Applications are invited for a Specialist in Blood and Marrow Transplantation and Cellular Therapy to work within the Haematology directorate based at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff. The University Hospital of Wales is a level 4 haematology unit supporting a large allogeneic Bone Marrow Transplant Service.

The post holder will be supported and mentored by the BMT Consultants as appropriate to their professional needs, and interest and active participation in clinical trials will be encouraged and supported. The post holder will be expected to participate in the ongoing teaching and training program within the department and there will be support to attend clinical and scientific meetings where appropriate to further aid development.

As part of a multidisciplinary team the post holder will contribute to the delivery of inpatient and outpatient services and participate in quality improvement programmes across all aspects of our services.

Cardiff & Vale UHB was commissioned as a CAR-T cell therapy centre for Wales in 2019. These therapies are amongst the first in the pipeline of cell therapies transitioning from ‘bench to bedside’ for both malignant and non-malignant diseases. They are considered to be highly innovative personalised treatments offering potentially effective therapy with severe but manageable adverse events which require specialised monitoring and management.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Clinical

• You will provide with senior colleagues (as appropriate) a service in the speciality to the hospitals so designated, with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness and promotion of health.
• The post holder will contribute to the clinical and quality aspects of the blood and marrow transplant and CAR-T programmes.
• You will provide direct clinical care to in-patient, ambulatory care, day centre and out-patient areas.
• You will lead discussions within the donor selection meetings with the Welsh Transplantation Services
• You will give appropriate, effective and safe advice to health care professionals seeking guidance from senior medical or nursing colleagues.
• You will maintain close liaison with other members of the multi-disciplinary team.
• You will be expected to help in teaching aspects of diagnosis, treatment and management of diseases to resident medical staff and nursing staff.
• Any other duties with other agencies that have been agreed with the employing Health Board.

Continuing Education

• It is important for the appointee to keep abreast of current knowledge/legislation and developments regarding his or her particular speciality.  In addition, the appointee would be expected to participate fully in continuing medical education (CME) / continuous professional development (CPD) and to pursue specific goals.
• There is also the opportunity to participate fully in the postgraduate activities within Cardiff University School of Medicine.
• There is a very active postgraduate training department, which organises medical and dental education led by the Dean of Postgraduate Medical and Dental Education within Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW).
• Time off for study leave may be granted for education purposes to attend courses at the discretion of the Clinical Director and in accordance with the UHB Policy.  This will be subject to the leave being planned well in advance and provided the clinical service is covered.  At least six weeks notice is required.  A Study Leave Approval Form must be completed and authorised by the Consultant and Clinical Director.

Research

• Personal clinical research will be encouraged in addition to participating in current     programmes.  Excellent research facilities are available on site.

Administrative

• You will be responsible for undertaking the administrative duties associated with the care of patients and the administration of the department.
• All employees have an individual responsibility to adhere to the Infection Control Policy and to protect themselves, the patient, visitors and colleagues from the risk of infection. The individual responsibility will include the requirement to attend training at intervals determined by the Health Board and understand Infection Control issues as they pertain to their workplace. They will report any identified infection risk and take necessary precautions/actions to prevent transmission.
• Under the provisions of the UK General Data Protection Regulation and the Data Protection Act 2018 it is the responsibility of each member of staff to ensure that all personal data (information that is capable of identifying a living individual) relating to patients, staff and others to which they have access to in the course of employment is regarded as strictly confidential. Staff must refer to the Health Board’s Data Protection Policy (available via the UHB intranet) regarding their responsibilities.
• Travel as necessary between hospitals/clinics will be required but a planned and cost-effective approach will be expected.
• You will be required to participate and contribute to Clinical Audit in line with the Health Board’s policy on the implementation of Clinical Governance.
• The successful candidate will be encouraged to attend departmental meetings.

Management

• You will be required to co-operate with local management in the efficient running of services and expected to share with consultant colleagues in the medical contribution to management within your supporting professional activities.  In addition, it should be noted that a system of Clinical Directorship is in operation and close liaison with appropriate colleagues will be required.
• You will be required to work within the financial and other restraints decided upon by the Health Board.  Additional expenses of any kind will not be committed without the approval of the appropriate manager/budget holder.  All changes in clinical practice, workload or development requiring additional resources must have prior agreement with the Health Board.
• Subject to the Terms and Conditions of Service you will be expected to observe policies and procedures of the Health Board, drawn up in consultation with the profession where they involve clinical matters.
• You will be expected to pursue local and national employment and personnel policies and procedures in the management of employees of the Health Board.
• You will be required to ensure that arrangements are in place for adequate medical/dental staff to be available in relation to the treatment and care of patients.
• You will be required to conform to best management practice in respect of patient activity and waiting lists.
