We are currently recruiting a Specialist Grade Doctor to join our forward-thinking Rheumatology team within NHS Fife.

The successful applicant will join a consultant-led Rheumatology service and will share responsibility for delivering a high-quality, comprehensive clinical service within the Fife Rheumatic Diseases Unit.

The post holder will be expected to manage rheumatology inpatient ward referrals, provide specialist advice and guidance to primary care, and support clinical queries arising from the wider rheumatology multidisciplinary team, including specialist nurses and Allied Health Professionals.

An interest in, or previous experience of, working with patients with vasculitis, connective tissue disease and osteoporosis would be advantageous, as the post offers exposure to a varied and interesting caseload across these areas.

It is essential that applicants have broad experience in common rheumatological disorders, including inflammatory arthritis, soft tissue rheumatology and connective tissue diseases/vasculitis, and are competent in the use and monitoring of biological therapies. Applicants with specific sub-interests within rheumatology are encouraged to apply.

Applicants must hold Membership of the Royal College of Physicians, be registered with the General Medical Council, and have a minimum of 10 years’ postgraduate medical experience, including at least 6 years with rheumatology experience or exposure in a current or closed SAS grade. Equivalent years’ experience in a relevant specialty from other medical grades including from overseas will also be considered and meet the criteria set out in the generic capabilities framework for new specialist grade. Excellent communication, listening and organisational skills are essential.

There are no out-of-hours or general medical commitments associated with this post.

Appropriate supporting professional activity and CPD time will be provided.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential

  • Eligible to work in the UK
  • Full GMC Registration with a Licence to Practice
  • Membership of the Royal College of Physicians or qualification at equivalent level
  • 10 years post medical graduation with at least 6 years in Rheumatology or relevant specialty at speciality doctor and or closed SAS grades level. Equivalent years experience in a relevant medical speciality at middle grade level including from overseas will also be accepted.
  • Able to manage and treat patients in clinic independently
  • Able to manage complexity in the care of patients as an autonomous practitioner

Desirable

  • An interest in or experience working with connective tissue disorders, vasculitis and osteoporosis
  • 12 months experience in rheumatology or associated medicine in the UK
  • Experience of working at consultant level

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with an ability to discuss treatment options with patients/carers in a way they can understand
  • Demonstrates initiative and resilience to cope with changing circumstances
  • Evidence of effective MDT communication with demonstration of collaborative working, sharing administration duties.

  • Training in communication skills

Audit/ research / teaching experience

Essential

  • Experience and evidence of an active commitment to clinical audit, clinical risk management & evidence-based practice
  • A solid understanding of basic research principles, methodology & ethics, with a potential to contribute to research
  • Evidence of leading and contributing to the teaching & learning of others

Desirable

  • Higher teaching degree or qualifications
  • Research publications
