An exciting opportunity has arisen for a position of Specialist in Anaesthesia at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust. The post holder must be medically qualified with at least 12 years of Anaesthesia experience, maintain GMC registration and hold a license to practice

The role offers opportunities to work within one of the largest, academically active anaesthetic department in the country, supporting excellence in clinical care, education, research, quality improvement and innovation.

This is primarily a clinical role to be carried out across all sites of Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Trust.  The job is 10 PAs per week for a whole-time contract - DCCs 9 PAs and SPA 1 PA at the start with opportunities in expanding supporting professional activities based on specific experience in other fields.

Main duties of the job

Provide comprehensive care across a wide range of surgical specialities, delivering safe, effective and evidence-based peri-operative care for patients undergoing elective and emergency procedures.

Undertake independent clinical practice in accordance with GMC standards, maintaining the competencies required to provide high-quality anaesthetic services across multiple clinical settings, including theatres, day surgery, interventional radiology, cardiac catheter laboratories, endoscopy and pre-operative assessment.

Participate in providing emergency anaesthetic services and specialist support as required, while working flexibly across Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital sites to meet service needs. There will be no On call commitment.

Contribute to the education, supervision and development of medical students, anaesthetic trainees, clinical fellows and multidisciplinary colleagues.

Participate in clinical governance activities, including audit, quality improvement, morbidity and mortality reviews, incident investigation and the implementation of learning to improve patient safety and service quality.

Support research, innovation and service development, working collaboratively with clinical, nursing and managerial colleagues to enhance patient outcomes, operational performance and organisational objectives.

Undertake annual appraisals and job-planning as a part of revalidation

Clinical Skills

Essential

  • Evidence of Life support course activity in the last 3 years
  • Evidence of Ability to work independently at consultant level

Desirable

  • Additional diplomas in specialist areas including Perioperative medicine, regional anaesthesia

Clinical Experience

Essential

  • Comprehensive clinical experience in Anaesthesia equivalent to UK CCT and able to undertake independent clinical practice
  • Minimum of 12 years of anaesthesia experience

Desirable

  • Additional fellowships in specialist areas

Research and Teaching

Essential

  • Understanding of the principles and applications of clinical research
  • Experience of teaching and training undergraduates, postgraduates and junior medical staff
