Position:

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Specialist Biomedical Scientist within our UKAS accredited Haematology department based at University Hospital Crosshouse. This post is offered on a permanent basis.

Hours:

37 hrs / week over 7 days which will include working some public holidays (including Christmas/New Year).

The department operates a 24/7 shift system which includes working early shift, dayshift, backshift, overnights (lone working) and weekends. This is a contractual requirement for the successful candidate. Until suitably experienced, hours will be predominantly 9am to 10pm.

UK Driving Licence:

A UK driving licence is essential for this role.

What you will do:

The successful candidate will provide specialist testing services, including the analysis of results, using specialist equipment and manual testing methods. They will use professional judgement to assess quality control/technical failures therefore ensuring the consistent quality of patient results whilst complying with UKAS ISO 15189:2022 standards.

In addition to performing specialist testing, the candidate will answer enquiries from clinical staff, give advice on tests and specimen types and give results and reference ranges whilst always following departmental guidelines and procedures.

There is a robust departmental quality team which constantly strives to improve processes ensuring optimal performance and reliability of patient results.

The department operates busy Haematology, Blood Transfusion and Immunology laboratories, which the successful candidate will rotate through as well as the satellite lab at University Hospital Ayr.

The laboratory is well equipped with modern analytical equipment on both hospital sites. We also have a small but modern automated Immunology section providing allergy and autoimmune testing. Computing throughout, is by Clinisys Winpath Enterprise system.

Knowledge, training and/or experience required for this post:

Applicants must hold a BSc (Honours) degree in Biomedical Sciences, or an equivalent qualification, along with a Specialist Diploma in Haematology or demonstrable experience working at a specialist level. The degree must be accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) and approved for Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registration. Applicants are advised to contact the IBMS State Registration Unit (12 Coldbath Square, London, EC1R 5HL; Tel: 020 7713 0214) to confirm degree accreditation prior to submitting an application.

Candidates who have not completed the IBMS Specialist Portfolio in Haematology (including Blood Transfusion) may be appointed as a trainee at Band 6 in line with Agenda for Change Annex 21. Comprehensive on-the-job training will be provided, with opportunities to undertake further study up to MSc level.
