UHSx Histopathology East is looking for an enthusiastic and self-motivated HCPC registered Specialist Biomedical Scientist to join its busy, friendly Immunocytochemistry (ICC) team.

The Immunocytochemistry department offers an extensive antibody repertoire across two different staining platforms, the Dako Omnis’s and the Ventana Benchmark ultra,

The post holder will be responsible for continually loading and unloading the work across the two staining platforms in an organised and efficient manner to ensure maximum throughput across the day.

The successful candidate must have an extensive background knowledge of routine Histology and must be experienced and competent in the microtomy of biopsy material, including skim cores and scanty material.

Good interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team essential requirements.

Applicants must have demonstrable registration experience in Histology and must be currently working in a UKAS accredited Cellular Pathology laboratory.

Main duties of the job

To participate in the provision of the Immunocytochemistry (ICC) service, supporting the Senior Specialist BMS with the day to day running of the department whilst supervising laboratory assistant staff working within the area.

The individual would also be expected to identify and triage urgent cases, trouble shoot technical issues, monitor stock and regularly participate in the quality control check of all cases leaving the department, escalating any issues to the Senior BMS.

The post holder will also be required to participate in the quality management system for the department, ensuring UKAS and Health and Safety compliance is always maintained.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This role is eligible for visa sponsorship under the UK Visas & Immigration (UKVI) Skilled Worker route however sponsorship can only be provided where applicants meet the specific requirements set by UKVI, including the relevant skill and salary thresholds (£25000), and any role-specific criteria.

  • Participate in the day-to-day operations within the Immunocytochemistry department
  • Responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the automated staining machines
  • Encourage and help implement new initiatives in collaboration and negotiation with the Senior BMS for ICC.
  • Participate in the validation and verification of new equipment or tests within the department
  • Ensure sufficient control material is continually available for all tests required.
  • Competent and experienced at cutting multiple sections from skim core biopsies and scanty material thus allowing complex and extensive ICC panels to be undertaken
  • Monitor internal quality control of all tests, escalating concerns to the Senior BMS
  • Prepare and send external quality assessment material to scheme organisers
  • Evaluates results of external quality assessment in conjunction with the Senior BMS
  • Report any instances or events failure to senior management that may cause a failure in service delivery.
  • Trouble shoot equipment malfunctions, contacting engineers as and when required
  • Liaise with clinical staff to ensure optimal service delivery.
  • Utilise resources efficiently and cost effectively
  • Actions low levels of supplies appropriately to ensure continuous supply
  • Support senior staff in stock management and ordering
  • Ensure quality assurance and quality control activities are performed and are effective in ensuring the department maintains ISO 15189 accreditation.
  • Plan and process departmental submissions to EQA and inter-comparison schemes.
  • Liaise with genomics hub as and when required, attends any meetings as directed by the Senior BMS

Person specification

Skills

Essential

  • Competent in all routine lab techniques including core and small biopsy microtomy
  • Previous practical experience in a busy ICC department

Desirable

  • Advanced knowledge of ICC
  • Experience using the Dako Omnis or Benchmark Ultra staining platforms
  • Experience of equipment validation and verification to UKAS 15189 standards
  • Experience using a lab tracking system

Education and Experience

Essential

  • Registered with the HCPC as a Biomedical Scientist
  • IBMS approved Biomedical Sciences Degree
  • Completion of the IBMS Specialist Portfolio in Cellular Pathology
  • Significant current and practical post registration experience in an NHS Cellular Pathology Lab

Desirable

  • Evidence of post graduate experience and professional development
  • Understanding of quality management systems and UKAS 15189 requirements
